Matt gave the large griffon an awkward smile and handed him his menu. "Would you have something akin to steak available?"
The waiter struggled to suppress a smirk, answering the question. "Well, I suppose you could try the steak on the menu. It's made from the finest beef. I believe that's the custom in the human world too, right?" Emily chuckled as her date's face got almost as red as her scales. She gave her own order, a luxurious feast that could feed Matt and his entire extended family for a week. He didn't mind her large appetite one bit. The more she gorged herself now, the less chance there was of him becoming dessert. She might be his date, but the towering dragon still looked like she could snap him up without another thought.
Emily was oblivious to his fears and when the waiter left smalltalk resumed. Matt talked a bit about his friends and family and the dragon had more than a few stories to share as well. One that stood out to him was the tale of Sapphire, a close friend of her and by her description the unluckiest dragon out there.
"So she decides it's time to make a name for herself, since she accidentally destroyed the last kingdom she was trying to dominate. Plan's easy enough: Swoop in, grab the princess, take her to lair and bingo, knights and heroes will come to her. She finally gets the attention she deserves and if that don't work, snatch up more of the royal family."
Matt sat and listened, no longer feeling unnerved by the casual tone with which the red dragon regaled stories of abduction and murder. There was something empowering about feeling completely outside of the law like her. The confidence with which she spoke was impressive, like this was just how things were supposed to be.
"Anyway, few days pass, nobody shows up yet and suddenly some scrawny peasant arrives. She puts on her best intimidation, but the guy explains he's not here for the princess, he's got a message from the king. Turns out the princess was a royal pain in the ass and he sent his thanks to Sapphire for dealing with his problem. So she's so pissed she goes from a blue dragon to a red dragon for a minute, flies over to the king and burns some villages along the way. Grabs the snarky shit right of his throne and nearly just eats him right there. She leaves, hoping the abducted king would spur some action."
"I think I can see where this is going..." Matt said jokingly, a big grin on his face.
"Yep, after a week a nobleman arrives to explain that the king was almost as big of a dickhead and if she could please eat them both. She just goes back inside and the only thing the guy hears was her loudly yelling 'oh for fuck sake!'. I mean, it'd be kinda sad if it wasn't so funny. I don't know how she does it, but this happens almost every time. She really has the worst luck. All she ever wanted was the attention of some valiant hero."
"Why though? Don't those guys usually only try to kill you?"
Emily burst out in laughter, her bellowing voice sending a shiver down your spine. "Hah, you really think their little swords can harm us? Nah, most stories about a hero defeating the foul dragon are a very one-sided retelling. Truth is, we just toy with them for a bit and leave when we're bored. If they survive the toying, they're free to write whatever heroic poetry they want, doesn't matter to us. Honestly, it's just fun to mess with people like that."
Matt felt a little nervous at his date's stories. Part of him felt like he was just another guy for her to play around with. By now their food had arrived and they were nearly at the end of their dinner. But Emily still had a surprise in store for him. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
