Journey to Sarnoval Ch 1 Pt 3

    by: metra Author IconMail Icon
“If you look at it from our government’s point of view then yes we are…” She then shifted her position and sat down in front of the young human. Her expression darkened and her tone became monotonous and grave, a startling contrast to how warm and kind she had seemed before. “Our government has crushed the idea of free thought. Its only interest is conquest and war, the citizens of our world either serve to further that interest or they are deemed useless and executed.” Ray listened to the description of the alien world with rapt interest, it seemed that she was more like a refugee than an extraterrestrial visitor. His thoughts were interrupted when she continued with her explanation, “Obviously I disagreed with our ‘grand and glorious government’ which meant that I was guilty of treason and worthy of execution,” Drawing breath she looked offhandedly to her right, “I didn’t leave alone, and I didn’t come here randomly without purpose. We aim to return our world to put an end to our corrupt and power hungry government. But we can’t do it without help,” She then turned to Ray.

“So… you came here to find me?” He asked.

“Not you specifically,” The canine replied while turning to meet his gaze, “We simply needed to expand our fighting strength by recruiting some outside help. We knew this world was populated with intelligent life and we also knew that we would be safe here. Earth used to be a site for harvesting natural resources for our own world thousands of years ago. But after we were able to learn how to farm and stimulate our own world’s natural resources, we abandoned the operation.”

“That makes sense,” Ray thought,“It’s kind of like those old movies where the villains or runaways would hide in abandoned railyards or mines. Nobody would ever go there to look and even if they did it would be like trying to find a needle in a hay stack…”

“Think you’re up to speed so far?” The wolf asked as she patiently waited for his reply.

“I think so yeah, thanks,” He then paused as another thought struck him, “I don’t mean to sound rude here… but, do you have a name? It feels wrong to just talk to you like this without anything to call you other than ‘she’ or ‘you’.”

The creature chuckled and nodded, “Yes I can see how that would seem a bit odd. To be honest with you I really don’t have a name. But it seems appropriate that I pick one if we’re going to be talking like this… any ideas?”

Ray looked at her in surprise, “You want me to name you?”

“I want you to help me decide on a name,” She replied while making sure to put emphasis on the word ‘help’.

“Right…” The human muttered as he closed his eyes in thought. Several names came to mind, but none that he’d consider calling her. “This is harder than I would’ve imagined it to be…” He thought, “We’re talking about naming something that, up until a moment ago didn’t exist.” After thinking hard on it, a vague memory resurfaced in Ray’s mind. An old name, one that once belonged to his imaginary friend when he was a child. She’d helped him get through so many tough days and was his constant companion when loneliness chose to visit him.

“Anything?” The canine asked, curiosity clearly written upon her face as he tail swayed back and forth in a calm and rhythmic manner.

“How about Sadie?” Ray asked, “Sadie was my imaginary friend when I was a kid. I’m not sure how, but it seems right to call you that.”

She seemed to take the name into consideration as she stared blankly at the ceiling and repeated the name a few times. Eventually she turned her eyes back to him while the edges of her mouth quirked up into a smile, “I like it, Sadie it is.”

Ray nodded in agreement with a smile of his own, “I don’t know why this makes me happy, but it just does,” he thought to himself as he watched Sadie shift herself so that she was laying down with her head resting atop her forepaws which were crossed in front of her body.

Once she was comfortable she began speaking once more, “Now then, I think you have the basic gist on what led up to this moment, so now I’m going to fill you in on the process I mentioned earlier. I’m just going to give it to you in a nutshell, when I bit you last night there was an exchange. My fangs penetrated your bone and injected a biological chemical compound into your bone marrow. That chemical is currently rewriting you’re DNA as we speak.” Struggling to keep himself from panicking, Ray simply nodded as calmly as he could. Sensing his alarm Sadie hastily pressed on with her explanation, “The changes to your DNA will allow you to do things that you couldn’t before. You’ll heal faster, jump farther and move quicker than any normal human.”

Ray arched an eyebrow up at her explanation, “Are you saying that I’m going to be some kind of superhero?” He asked incredulously.

Sadie’s face twisted in confusion before comprehension filled her face, “No,” She chuckled, “Not exactly. You still have limits; they’ve just been set a bit higher than their… ‘default’ settings.”

Ray nodded, “I… suppose that’s believable.”

It doesn’t matter whether you believe me or not,” Sadie returned in an even tone, “It happened, the only question now is what you’ll do next.”

         “Meaning?”

“I’ve done all I can to make sure that you’re up to speed on why I’ve come here. The question still remains though; will you help me and my allies change my world?” She asked. Her expression was grave but she asked the question so casually.

“Suppose I said yes? What could I do to help you?” Ray asked.

“If you were fighting an opponent of equal strength, would it not help to have an ally? Even if said ally only had half of your strength?” She reasoned.

The human nodded, “I can’t argue with that logic. So then, what if I said no?”

“Then I’d head back to my planet rather depressed and hope the others had better luck than me. What I’ve done with you can only be done once, I cannot duplicate the process with another human.”

“I see…” Ray now understood the importance of what was happening to him and the role that he could play in the fate of these Sarnoavans… if that was what they were actually referred to as. Not only did ray feel a sense of compassion for Sadie’s plight, but he also felt a sense of responsibility. He now had something that no other human did. He had the power to help change that fate of another planet.

“So?” Sadie asked, “Will you come?”
