The diAngelo Multiplication

“Miss Durant, thank you for coming so soon,” said Dr. Schnieder, a grey haired, balding man who was one of the directors of the clinic. “My associate, Dr. Caulapa, said you were very responsive during your clinical checkup.”

“Yes, well, it’s a tremendous opportunity,” Regan said, crossing her legs as she sat down. Her aim was to play up her more positive qualities, having undergone much scrutiny.

“Normally, you would not be her first choice,” Dr. Schnieder continued, “as we usually look to married women who have a dedicated family structure, and you have not previously had a birth. But your medical history aligns with an interesting proposition, which is why I have vouched for you to begin surrogacy so soon. Since you are a twin.”

Reagan smiled, although she was somewhat confused. “Yes?”

“And your family has a history of multiples, correct?”

“Yes, both our grandmothers were twins, along with some twin great-uncles. And if you go far back enough there’s triplets.” Regan was beginning to wonder if she was getting in over her head.

“And without me being too bold, Miss Durant, you have quite the pair of child bearing hips.”

The doctor didn’t sound lecherous, although Reagan appreciated the flattery for her body. “Where exactly is this going, doctor?”

Dr. Schnieder opened a file. “It used to be a common practice that multiple viable embryos were transferred into a surrogate. It wasn’t always the case that each would begin gestating. Although there are some who are interested in having multiples from a surrogacy, and in my studies a woman with a family lineage of multiple births will have a better chance at carrying the babies to term, even if her eggs are not used. Are you aware of the diAngelos?”

Reagan was taken aback. “Should I be?”

“Julian and Margaret diAngelo. Media moguls, they run several charitable foundations but they have always dreamed of having their own family. Margaret has been unable to bear children, however they are quite insist on having their own children rather than adoption with a suggested agency”

Reagan had been planning for this exact moment, although the prospect of carrying what, two(?), three babies(?) was a daunting one. She might almost break her cover story.

“There is, of course, additional financial compensation to you for the stresses of a multiple birth,” Dr. Schneider said.

More babies, more money?

Reagan had come this far, and at that moment she had decided to take the plunge. “I’ll do it.”

More scheduling and procedures followed this monumental decision, including Reagan meeting the couple and starting a regimen of prenatal vitamins. And holy smokes the diAngelos were loaded! They dressed fancy, took Reagan out to dinner at a steakhouse to discuss options, and were very supportive and excited about the prospects. If Reagan had been doubting her objective until now, knowing that the parents in this endeavor had deep pockets stymied what concerns she had about such a tremendous undertaking.

And changes soon occurred for Reagan as her schemes hit a snag:
