Once, Synthia had known Dr. Willis primarily as the mother of her best friend, Haylie. She knew the woman was a baby doctor, but had no knowledge of what that meant. That was all different now.
Mom had chosen Dr. Willis for one reason: she had a private clinic in the basement of her home. Mom was determined to protect Synthia from curiosity-seekers, so much so as to home-school her herself rather than risk Synthia being tormented by bullies or poked and prodded by teachers and classmates. With Dr. Willis, Mom and Synthia could enter the house's back door and use the same back entrance the doctor used. The other patients didn't suspect that the first patient of the day was so underage.
"Hello, Synthia," the doctor said. "My, that's a pretty dress you're wearing today."
Synthia thanked her, just to be polite. She hated dresses, but she no longer fit into her slacks or jeans.
"Is there anything you're wondering about?"
"Well, my chest is itchy and sore, and it feels a little swollen."
"Well, Synthia, having a baby affects more than just the belly. I suspect that's just your body getting ready to make milk, to feed the baby when it's born."
She had Synthia raise her dress so it covered her chest, but left her belly bare. It was so large now that it completely covered her upper thighs and hid that area. Then she wheeled over a big machine.
"This," said Dr. Willis, "is a sonogram. It's going to look inside you and show us a picture of what's inside."
Dr. Willis rubbed some cold, clear gel on Synthia's belly, then touched a plastic device to the mound and turned on the machine. It made whoosh-whoosh noises as the doctor moved it around.
"There we go," the doctor said, and Synthia got her first look at...
