A new friend.

The rain fell gently as Claire made her way to work one Monday morning. She had missed her bus, annoyingly, but despite it being a miserable start to the week, Claire tried to remain positive. "It's only water, and it's not too heavy." She mumbled to herself, but as soon as she said that, the heavens opened more and the rain started pouring heavier. "Oh great Claire! Keep your mouth shut in future." Claire grumbled to herself, rushing for the cover of a nearby sheltered doorway at the front of a decrepit but 'artful' abandoned building near town. Sighing, she got her phone out to call work, to let Emma know she'd be late, but... there was no signal. "Shit!" She said, groaning aloud and hitting the side of her phone. "Technology sucks ass!"

Around her, a few people also rushed to get out of the rain, but everyone else was intelligent enough to be indoors during such a downpour. Rolling her eyes, and wondering if her day could get worse, Claire leaned backwards on the door of the abandoned old building, which dated back to the Victorian era. The paintwork on the door was peeling, the doorknob was broken and dirt and cobwebs adorned the doorway. With a yelp escaping Claire's lips, the doorway creaked... and gave way. Claire found herself falling backwards and landed with a thud. As her slender, androgynous frame hit the floor, dust was sent up around her and her glasses nearly came off. The door recoiled on itself, then bounced back and slammed shut, leaving Claire in a dark, dusty room, coughing as she stood up. "Of course your day can get worse Claire, you know it can." She told herself, trying to clear her throat as her eyes tried to adjust to the dark. She dusted off her jacket and the Wilko polo shirt underneath as she stood up straight.

Across the room, she suddenly saw a glint, something shiny on one of the walls. It was only a bit, but in the dark... it stood out. She trudged across the room, her footsteps echoing. This building definitely creeped her out. She knew it used to be a Solicitor's building, which left Claire unimpressed. She hated lawyers. But what it had been before that, she had no idea.

Upon arriving at the wall, Claire could make out it was some kind of glass, an old mirror of some sort. Which she thought was strange, because nobody would leave a mirror behind, surely? And this one looked intact, if dirty. Reaching into the pocket of her wet jacket, Claire retrieved a tissue and immediately wiped the thick dust and grime off some of the mirror. She instantly got the shock of her life when some sort of flying 'creature' slammed her tiny hands on the other side of the 'mirror'. Claire squealed and staggered backwards, before she narrowed her eyes and studied the creature more closely. Unless she was mistaken, it looked like a fairy. A small creature, no more than 8 inches tall, female appearance, with four lightweight wings flapping behind her. But what struck Claire the most was not the fact that such a creature existed, but that it seemed to be in some distress and was gesturing to the glass itself.

It took a moment for Claire to realize that the fairy was trying to tell her to break the glass. Still flabberghasted, Claire shrugged to herself, unable to find the appropriate words for the situation. Instead, she looked down around her on the dusty, creaking floor, luckily the fairy's body was giving off some light even through the mirror, so she was able to see. She grabbed an old chair leg off the floor and slowly raised it, not sure what she was doing still. Then again, Claire had always been the helpful sort, and this creature seemed to be terribly distressed.

The fairy backed up, flapping her wings furiously, and she nodded, smiling. Smash!! It took her three attempts, but Claire managed to break the glass before her, and some sort of mini shockwave sent her stumbling backwards. There was also a flash of light that accompanied the sound of breaking glass, and suddenly the fairy was hovering in front of her, looking very relieved and VERY grateful. It was an eerie feeling for Claire, to say the least.

"Oh goodness, thank you human! You have no idea how long I've been trapped behind that stupid magical barrier." The fairy said, as she pirouhetted

"Um... you're welcome?" Claire shrugged, her facial expression saying it all.

"Allow me to introduce myself, they call me Myx. I believe your race refers to mine as 'fairies', which is very quaint." Myx giggled, immediately showing her mischievous but good natured personality to Claire.

Claire stood staring for a moment, stil surrounded mostly by dust and darkness. Then she spoke up again after pinching herself to make sure she hadn't been knocked unconscious and was having a weird dream. "Uh... I'm Claire. P-p-pleased to meet you, I guess." She stuttered.

Myx giggled again, but then frowned, noticing Claire's soaking wet and dirty clothes. "Oh that won't do." She said, quickly shooting forwards and flying around Claire several times really fast, creating an upblast of warm air that instantly dried and cleaned her clothes. "There you go, good as new." Myx then laughed.

"Wow!! Er... that was amazing, thank you." Claire gasped, inspecting her jacket, Wilko shirt and her black slacks. Even her sensible lace-up women's shoes were spotless now, and her glasses had been cleaned.

"Amazing? Oh that was nothing, I can do much more than that, as you'll find out now that we're friends." Myx responded... imodestly. "I can already tell you're nothing like that mean witch that trapped me behind there for no reason other than she didn't like my kind." She huffed. But even her angry mood wasn't bad. In fact, Claire was already entertained by Myx.

Nodding, and inspecting her clothes again, Claire suddenly looked at her watch. "Oh crap! I'll so be late for work if I don't get a move on." She blurted out, as she turned to bolt from the building. But she looked back. "Nice to meet you... Myx, er... " She muttered.

"Oh I'm coming with you. You're my new friend." Myx giggled again, flying after Claire. "And don't worry, nobody will see me, only you." She reassured her with a wink which gave Claire some comfort. "Though people may think you are three ales short of a pub if they see you talking to yourself." She giggled.

I'm thinking that myself. Claire thought, her face still wearing an amused smile. Then she spoke up again. "Okay, tag along, but I've really got to get to work or Emma will be giving me a disciplinary." She told Myx. The fairy nodded and used her 'powers' to open the busted door, allowing Claire access to the outdoors. Luckily the rain had now eased off, and Claire was able to proceed to work. Her new friend following close behind.
