This choice: Lyn is back to normal when she wakes  •  Go Back...
Chapter #8

Carrying the Weight of Life

    by: LightNXClash Author IconMail Icon
Lyn woke up in a bit of an uncomfortable position. She opened her eyes to realize she was face to face with Hector. She scrambled backwards as the embarrassing events of the previous night came rushing back to her. She saw him stir as she moved away.

“Lyn?” He said, opening his eyes. “Oh, you’re back to normal.”

Lyn stared directly at him for a number of seconds, before quickly grabbing her sword (which had also grown back to normal size) off of the table and rushing out of the tent. Hector didn’t follow.

Once she was outside, Lyn took a few moments to collect herself. She seemed to have grown back to her full height, and nothing seemed to feel different. She looked around to see that the sun still had yet to come up. So nobody was likely to have seen her walk out of Hector’s tent. Lyn took a deep breath before starting to walk back to her tent, careful not to wake noise and arouse suspicion about her being out so early in the morning. She likely had a few hours before their army would move out, so she could get a few more hours of sleep.

As she walked, Lyn thought about how long she had been shrunken for. It was about two hours between her shrinking and going to bed, then she tried to fall asleep for another hour before going to sleep in Hector’s hand. She knew she grew back sometime while asleep, which was probably about six hours. So all in, she was probably tiny for somewhere in the range of four to eight hours.

Shaking her head, Lyn tried to put shrinking out of her mind. She stepped into her tent and laid down on her sleeping mat, trying not to think about what had happened. She was not very successful.

What felt like as soon as Lyn felt like she had fallen asleep, she heard her army’s bell ring, the signal that they were about to move out soon. She considered ignoring it and going back to sleep, but she needed to set an example for the rest of her army.

While she was packing up her tent, she saw Hector and Eliwood talking with each other, before Hector turned and started walking over to her. “Hey, Lyn. About last night-”

“I’m fine.” She cut him off. Talking to Hector was not currently on her list of things she wanted to do.

“Are you sure? You’re not acting like you’re fine.”

“I’m sure. I’d rather not talk about it.”

Hector didn’t seem convinced. “Well, alright. I just wanted to apologize for beating you so badly in our duel.”

Lyn yanked the string on her pack angrily. “You know that’s not what I’m upset about!” She turned around quickly to face him, hair whipping behind her. “And it’s not like you completely defeated me! You just got lucky is all!”

“Yeah, sure.” Hector said with a smile. Lyn knew he was just trying to goad her into talking, but she was too frustrated to care. “Well, anyways Lyn, I just wanted to say it’s good to see you back to normal. Good luck in today’s battle.” He turned to walk away.

Lyn bit her lip. She knew this was a bad idea, but didn’t really care at this point.

“Hector!” She called after him. “After this battle, I’ll challenge you again!”

“Oh?” Hector turned around. She couldn’t tell if he had been trying to get her to agree to this or not. “Same conditions?”

“Same conditions.” She replied. “I beat you, and you admit you were wrong. And if I lose…” Lyn’s voice trailed off as her face began to glow.

“Well alright then. Don’t tire yourself out in the battle. You’ll need to be at your best if you want to beat me.” This time Lyn didn’t respond when he turned and walked away. Instead, she put her head in her hands as the weight of what she just agreed to set in.

If she lost, she’d have to shrink herself again. But for some reason, she felt almost excited about it. If she really thought about it, being shrunken was kind of fun. If it wasn’t for her annoyance due to it being a result of losing a duel to Hector, she imagined she might have enjoyed herself.

Before the army moved out, Florina had returned with her report of the next area they’d be moving to. She had claimed a massive sandstorm had enveloped the area, and they’d have to move through it to progress. Which prompted Hector to exclaim how much he hated sand, saying it was coarse and irritating. Once Florina finished her report, she joined Lyn as they were preparing to move out.

The battle they had fought turned out to be much less difficult than Lyn imagined. Even though she had trouble seeing in the thick sand storm, it felt like by the time she and her allies had joined the battle, the majority of the enemy forces they had expected to find had already been taken care of. Lyn didn’t mind though, since it gave her time to prepare for her duel with Hector in the coming night.

“Parry, lower slash, upwards jab, f-smash” Lyn repeated in her head, reciting the new sword techniques she had been practicing since the battle. Techniques that were supposed to work very well against axe fighters like Hector. “Alright Lyn, are you ready?” Hector called from just across the field.

Lyn put her hand on her sword and leaned downwards. “Ready” she yelled back. And with a start both fighters dashed towards each other.

“You did better that time” Hector said as he stood over Lyn once again. “Almost got me a couple times. Were you just a bit stronger, you probably would have won that fight.” Lyn groaned in frustration. She had lost. Again. His commiserations just made her loss sting more.

She glanced towards him in time to see Hector toss another vial of the thick blue liquid at her. She stuck her hand up to catch it before it hit her in the head. “Can you at least try to take this seriously?” Lyn asked, exasperated.

“Don’t worry, even if it spilled on you, you would still shrink. I’m told you actually don’t need to drink it at all, as long as it makes contact with you.”

Lyn glared at Hector. She looked down at the potion in her hand. She had already been shrunken once, and even though it made her completely helpless, it wasn’t such a bad experience. She supposed shrinking a second time wouldn’t be so bad.

“Fine, I’ll shrink myself again..” Lyn said. “You’d better take care of me while I’m tiny though, just like last time.”

Hector chuckled. “It’s a deal. I’ll even let you sleep in my hand again.”

Lyn’s face turned a deep red, but she lifted the vial to her lips anyways. She remembered how last time, she had shrunken very quickly. This time instead of swallowing the potion in one gulp, she took it more slowly, over the course of a few sips.

Even before the little bottle was halfway gone, Lyn felt the same tightness she had experienced from last time return, and she saw Hector begin to grow larger in her vision, along with all of her surroundings. By the time it was empty, Lyn was around half her size, and she still continued to shrink. Only when she was nearing the size of a mere three inches did her shrinking stop, leaving her no bigger than she was the last time she was shrunken.

Lyn picked herself off the ground to stare up at Hector, who had once again become a giant to her. He crouched down, and extended his hand, gently pinching her between his index finger and thumb, before he lifted her up into the air. Had he pinched harder, Lyn imagined it would have been quite uncomfortable, but she could tell he was being careful not to hurt her. Once he lifted her up to eye level, he deposited her in his other hand. Lyn adjusted her position, shifting her legs out to the side and putting her hand behind her. Once she had gotten comfortable, Hector stood up and began walking back to their camp once again.
