Chapter #9

Out of the Cold!

As they wait for the patrol to pass, Titania focused on the Daein soldiers, noting all the details as they passed.

“Seven guards for this patrol, mostly grunts with one crew leader. Standard weapons in rough condition and lack of cohesive marching indicating not highly trained soldiers.” Titania relayed

“If we can figure out the patrol timings we could probably assume similar timings on the inside” Sigrun added

“Now the question is, do these patrols continue inside…” Tanith continued

The patrol passed the entrance, continuing towards the other side of the fortress.

“Well that answers my question. They must do a sweep of the perimeter every now and then.” Tanith confirmed

“Woah, how can you tell all that?” Nephenee wondered

“Well, they don’t march in time or with solid posture. Their scabbards looks damaged, like they don’t take care sheathing weapons so it’s a safe bet they don’t maintain their weapons or train diligently.” Titania answered, as Nephenee nodded in agreement.

“Their patrol routes and timings might be scheduled, allowing us to abuse that pattern to traverse the fort undetected.” Sigrun smiled

“You’re all so smart…” Nephenee said shyly

“That must mean they’re wary of certain points around the fortress, we should be careful about what path we take back out.” Titania mused

“But that also means there’s probably more routes outside. Even more than they would be aware of since we’re so small. We should keep vigilant for any such pathways as we move through the fort.” Sigrun pointed out

“It’s certainly a blessing having the two of you with us. Let’s move now that the patrol has passed by. There’s two guards flanking the doors, so we should proceed with caution.” Titania analysed.

As they approach the side of the stairs, noting the snow provided a slope that lead to up to the doors. The group marched up the snow, making sure to not balance their attention between the guards above them and not sinking into the snow beneath them. They reach the top of the stairs about a metre behind the guard posted to the left side of the door. Keeping their attention on him, with a quick glance towards the guard on the opposite side.

“Hey, Marcus, you hear about the bigshot coming here today?” The guard on the other side said.

“I heard someone important is coming, why, you know who it is Wade?” Marcus replied

“Nope, no idea, just that we’re to make sure everything’s in order, apparently they’re quite strict and ruthless, a real piece of work. So nobody gets past us.” Wade replied

“Sounds like every Daein boss!” Marcus laughed, “So that’s why you’ve not looked away from the road. I was wondering why you’re so focused today! Don’t want to ruin your chance at a promotion, huh?”

“Yep, I ain’t getting in trouble with the higher ups. No one’s getting in through these doors, if someone gets in, it’ll be won’t be through here!” Wade smirked

As the ladies entered the fort, they took stock of their surroundings. A giant corridor extended out in front of the tiny group, extending for what looked like a mile before a sharp turn to the right. As Titania and the rest of the group took a second to appreciate the warmth of the torches spread through the corridor, she noticed a few doors lining the corridor on both sides.

“That’s so much better...” Ilyana smiled, as she handed the cape back to Tanith, “Thank you again, Tanith”

“No problem, Ilyana, Pegasi riders are used to the cold when flying up high.” Tanith smiled, donning the cape again

“Careful Tanith, what would the others think if they saw you being so accommodating” Sigrun joked

Tanith blushed before changing the subject “Anyway, we should think about what room we look to investigate first. We’ll need somewhere that’s unoccupied and unlikely to be frequented if we’re to regrow and launch a surprise attack.”

“You’re right, best to pick one of those doors unless we want to risk being spotted by a patrol.” Lucia agreed

“It would be best to investigate more of the fortress first, so we can learn their structure and more populated areas.” Titania advised

As they walked into the corridor, they spotted a few doors on both sides, before the corridor turned to the right, seemingly a mile away.

“And here I thought the outside looked massive, these corridors look like they could go all the way to Begnion!” Sigrun commented

“These corridors are indeed massive. We’ll have to be careful not to be caught too far from a hiding place.” Titania explained

“So much walking…” Ilyana softly complained

“Don’t stress Ilyana, we can find a quiet place to hide and relax soon.” Lucia said to comfort the meek mage.

“That’s a good point, finding somewhere quiet to hide should give us time to recover from the march and plan our next move. But where should we go?” Titania agreed, surveying the potential options as they moved.

“Perhaps a room with food? Ilyana looks about ready to pass out.” Tanith warned

“Oh… Food would be nice…” Ilyana softly said with a smile

“That could be an option, a bit risky since it probably would be frequented often.” Tanith analysed

“Perhaps once we learn more of their schedule, we can sneak in when it’s quiet.” Sigrun encouraged

“I hope no one comes near… Just passing those two guards was frightening, let alone a moving giant…” Nephenee admitted

As if on cue, the tiny group watched a giant patrol come around the corner, heading for them. As they looked for a door to hide in quickly, they heard one of the guards outside say, “Back from the patrol already?”

As they turned to meet the voice, they saw a patrol in the distance, heading towards the guards stationed at the steps.

“We’re flanked already?” Lucia said, questioning their luck.

“Calm down, let’s head to the nearest door, over there! Quick as we can.” Titania ordered calmly, just to not get rattled by the tremors from the approaching giant patrol.

They sprinted for the door closest to their left, and just as they got there…
