Chapter #5

A little Mother and (normal-sized)Son bonding

    by: Kooplan Author IconMail Icon
It a particularly slow morning for the Sheperds as they'd settled into their latest campsite just outside a town. Most of the day would be talking strategy and making preparations for the journey ahead, a job that Robin, Chrom, and Frederick mostly handled themselves. Most of the others in the group would be out training, relaxing, or otherwise finding ways to be useful around camp.

Morgan, son of the esteemed female tactician Robin, was even busying himself with some work in his tent. He'd even gotten up early to make sure he could finish on time. As the sun continued to rise over the horizon, Morgan heard some footsteps outside his tent and went to see who it was, hoping it was someone in particular.

"Oh, Mother! Good morning!" Morgan called out, peeking his little head out of his tent as Robin walked by. She stopped and greeted her son with a smile.

"Good morning, Morgan. You're up rather early." Robin said.

"Of course! I've got something big planned for us today!" Morgan exclaimed. He opened his tent a little wider, motioning for his mother to enter.

"Oh? This sounds promising." Robin said, although a little cautiously. Her day had just begun and Morgan was already being suspicious, well, more suspicious then usual. Inwardly, she suspected her son of preparing to play another prank on her, but decided to keep her suspicions to herself.

Robin entered the tent, discreetly looking carefully for any traps. Nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary. Morgan skipped inside happily. He ran over to his item chest and dug around inside for a bit. Robin peered over his shoulder from afar, wondering what he was up to. A moment later, Morgan pulled out a dusty-looking book of some sort. The boy held it up for his mother to see.

"Ah-ha. That's a spellbook." Robin stated with a curious smile. "Looking to get into the mystic arts like your Mother?" She asked him, a little proudly.

"I guess you could say that, yeah!" Morgan replied happily. Robin held out her hand for him to let her see the book, but Morgan pulled it close to himself. Without saying anything to explain himself, he opened it and started flipping through the pages.

"What's gotten into you? Can I see the book, please?" Robin asked.

"Hold on." Morgan shook his head. He shushed his mother, much to her annoyance, and began reciting a spell from the book. Robin gasped as she heard her son casting the spell with an amazing clarity.

"Morgan?! Don't tell me you've been practicing magic in secret now, have you?" Robin asked. Morgan finished casting the spell and replied.

"Something like that! Watch this!" Morgan told her with glee. He thrust his hand out, similarly to how Robin cast her own attack spells, and waited with bated breath. The two waited for something to happen, but after a minute, nothing did.

"Ha ha, looks like you need more practice, dear." Robin told her son, giving him a quick pat on his head.

"Oh, dang it! I thought I had it right!" Morgan whined. Robin smiled and went to his side.

"Hmm... Ah, here's where you went wrong." Robin explained the proper way to cast the spell. In her haste to help her son study spell-casting better, she never even thought to read what kind of spell he might be casting. Nevertheless, she went into great detail on how to better cast spells.

"Thank you, Mother! Now I see!" Morgan said.

"Anytime." Robin smiled. She then turned to leave the tent. "Now, I'd like you to take the rest of your day to study some more on magic for me, okay? In the meantime, I do have other things I need to do today, so if that's all, I'll be going..."

"WAIT!" Morgan cried.

"Hmm? Yes? Do you need something e-" Robin was about to say "else" when she turned back to Morgan and noticed something was off about him. He looked bigger somehow. Curious, Robin went over to him and stood side-by-side with her son. She covered her mouth and gasped when she saw that somehow they were same height.

"What sort of trickery is this!?" Robin was shocked. But then she remembered Morgan's spellbook and his rather odd activity. "Morgan, have you cast some sort of growth spell on yourself?"

"Nooo..." Morgan told his mother teasingly, now looking down at the white-haired woman. "Kind of the opposite, actually."

"Opposite?" Robin wonder what Morgan meant by that. But then she looked around and saw that Morgan wasn't the only thing bigger inside the tent. Indeed, everything looked bigger to her now. She blinked a few times to make sure this wasn't some kind of trick or illusion, but every time she opened her eyes the things around looked even bigger!

"Gods! You're shrinking me!" Robin yelled, putting it together.

"Bingo!" Morgan said jovially. He chuckled to himself as he watched his mother dwindle right in front of him.

"B-but why? And how!? I thought you weren't capable of casting magic?" Robin asked, starting to get worried.

"I can't!" Morgan gleefully admitted. "Buuuut, Ms. Tharja helped me out a little with some lessons and the perfect prank curse to use on you!"

"Tharja..!" Robin snarled. She shook her head. Somehow, she should've known that Tharja would be behind such a curse. Why the dark mage was helping her son shrink her however, was something she couldn't have guessed. However it worked, it worked well, as Robin was only about half the size of her son, and still getting smaller!

"Yep! But don't worry, mother. She said it was reversible, or wait, was it irreversible?" Morgan pondered, trying to remember.

"What?! You shrank me down to this size and you don't even know!" Robin shouted. Morgan only laughed in response.

"Relax, Mother!" He said, comically doubling over with a fit of the giggles. He tried to calm her down. "I was only kidding."

Robin glared up at her giant of a son. She was used to his pranks and tricks by now, but this one was on an entirely different level. She could only imagine what her giant of a son had in store for her. Morgan noticed his Mother's stern look and stopped making fun. He looked down at her nervously. Though she was only the size of a doll by now, she was still his Mother, and the white-haired woman knew well how to get him under her control, no matter what how small she was.

"Fine." Robin spoke at last, her single word sounding more resolute and subtly angry then Morgan could ever remember her being in the past, or future for that matter! "But why do this to me? Hmm? Why make a doll of your mother, Morgan?"

"Oh, you know..." Morgan drifted off mid-sentence, scratching at the back of his head. Robin groaned, she wasn't going to let Morgan off the hook that easily.

"Is this another one of your tests? Or perhaps a game of some sorts that requires me to be shrunk down?" Robin inquired.

"That's pretty much it, yeah!" Morgan answered, his tone made it seem as if he wasn't aware of how troublesome this whole situation was for Robin, he was indeed treating it like a game or any other one of his practical jokes. He pointed down at the tiny figure of his Mother. "You always beat me at my own games, and I admire that about you, Mom. But, I knew I'd have to up the difficulty of my little challenges if I wanted to best you! So, in this case, upping the difficulty means bringing down your height! Clever, isn't it?"

Robin scoffed. Morgan sure looked pleased with himself for devising this little downsizing scheme. She had to admit he kind of had a point, his games and tricks were no real trials to her before. If he only wanted to play, she figured she might indulge her boy for a bit. But when she was back to normal, she was going to make sure to think up a real nasty trick to play on him!

"I see. Well then, well done. You got me, Morgan. I must admit defeat." Robin told her son. She bowed to him to show her sincerity, much to his amusement. Robin couldn't help but smile. Even though her son had turned out to be quite the trickster she was proud of him for coming up with such a scheme. She looked up at her giant of a son and spoke,

"Now, set me back to normal and we'll 'forget' this ever happened." She told him honestly.

Morgan takes a moment to think about growing his mother back to her original size and decides...
