It was a month into the journey. The ship was in the midst of deep space. There was literally nothing for light-years in all directions. Nothing of any note had happened since they left the galaxy.
Which is why it was so concerning when something appeared on the scanners.
It wasn't even the long range scanners. Captain James had accidentally pressed the scanner button and it returned with a scan of an object twice the size of their ship - and on an intercept trajectory.
"James, there's nothing we can do at this time. This freighter has no defensive capabilities."
"C'mon Jax. There's got to be something we can do." James said pacing his private cabin. The scan of the object was projected into the middle of the room where him and the security officer had been studying it. "I'll try another scan."
"That may well alert them of our position. Maybe it could be a ship, maybe it could be an asteroid of some kind. Just change our trajectory a little and we'll miss it by a lightyear." Jax said. leaning back in the captain's desk chair. James was visibly shaken at the thought of it being a ship.
"If it's a ship on a insect course, it already knows we're here." James reasoned, exiting his cabin and heading towards the bridge.
"As long you change our trajectory, I've no qualms." Jax said, a few paces behind him. When he entered the bridge, James was seated at the console. The two pensively watched the scanner as the wave emanated from their ship. The image returned, more detailed than before. The scan read back agonizingly slow for them. Line after line of pixels built the image in a one-sided 3D image of the object. Except it wasn't an object.
It was a ship.
James sat with his hands over his mouth and nose. Jax stared in fear at it. It was alien in design. They hadn't seen anything like it before, not even from xenoarchaeologist finds.
"What do we do?" Jax asked
"There's nothing we can do." James responded. "They'll upon us in a few days." a light appeared on the console. They being scanned, heavily. The two officers watched as the light flickered for a few hours. Then, a message appeared in the console. Jax opened it for the captain.
"SURRENDER AND LIVE"
"What do you think, sir?" Jax asked. There was no response as the captain stared at the message. "Sir?"
"...Sir?"
"We have to surrender." James said into his hands
"But we don't know if we can trust them." Jax responded harshly.
"We don't have a choice. They know we're here, their ship is bigger and probably armed enough to destroy us in an instant. Our only hope is to surrender." James said as he pulled up an interface to make an announcement to the entire crew. He made the announcement to which some of the crew voiced concerns, but reached consensus that surrender was their best option. After several days, the aliens arrived and boarded their ship. What species was it?
Tel'cantir: These humanoids will use the crew as energy batteries, meaning they will store massive amounts of energy in them, as fat.
Kellitac: This squid-like race will probably fatten the crew up for 'research' purposes. As well as trying to make them do things under observation for 'research'
Alaamtila: This beyond-ancient race of machines have a strange fascination with fat humans, similar to ancient humans. Perhaps they're looking for a certain shape or weight?
