This choice: You reach the Point with no difficulties. • Go Back...Chapter #4Reaching the Point (of no return) by: Mr.Domino Even with flashlights and the full moon overhead, it was slightly freaky being in the forest at night. It wasn't the first time, of course, you don't grow up in a small town with not a whole lot to do without ever setting foot in the woods, but there was definitely something different about tonight. During the day this was a pretty nice trail, it was a soft incline and in the winter you could see out across the valley where town was, as well as the creek's rather dramatic path down through the woods. But in the dark, though, all you could see was what was illuminated by your flashlight, and whatever moonlight made it down through the canopy. After a few minutes of tense silence as you left the glow of the campfire behind though, Keanu nudged you and slid his backpack off his shoulder.
"Dude, don't worry. Bears don't come down off the mountains this late! And if we get into trouble, well..." Keanu said enthusiastically as he unzipped his backpack and slipped his hand in. You recoiled when you saw, in the pale light of your flashlight, what he pulled out; a loaded magnum.
"Holy shit!" You half-yelled, back-pedaling away from your best friend, "What the hell Kee?"
"Don't worry, it's legal!" He joked before sliding it back into his bag, "Remember when that moose fucked over those tourists last year? Totaled their car and put them both in the hospital in Big Tree? Well dad decided that me, mom and him should all get protection in case it ever happened to us. That's why we were all out of town right afterwards, we were taking gun safety courses"
"And why am I just learning about this now?" You frowned as you walked back over to your friend, still surprised and feeling a little bit betrayed that he kept this a secret from you.
"I don't know. Just sort of slipped my mind with all the college shit we were both doing. Anyway, it's not like I've actually had it on me a lot. Can't exactly carry a firearm onto school premises, even if it is locked in your trunk. Sorry, I guess."
You could totally tell he didn't mean it, but you just gave him a look before turning and heading up the path, "Well come on then, Rambo. I think we're almost there"
The two of you resumed walking in silence for a few minutes, the sounds of forest life all around you. Not that you were going to show it, but you did feel a little safer knowing about the gun. They weren't common but there were wolves and moose around, not that anything short of a cannon would stop a moose, but the added level of security did help. It would also deter any Druggies, should you stumble across a violent one. Most of Owl Creek's drug users typically kept to themselves, an eclectic group of men and women of all ages that seemed, on the surface at least, pretty counter culture. Though there were some in their small population that had a history of being violent.
"So" You said, breaking the silence, "What was up with Pete back there?"
"You got hugged by his girl and he got his panties in a twist about it" The future football star beside you said, "Man, you didn't know that Pete's been crushing on Stacy since Freshman year? I know you were hitting those books hard but dude, did not know you were that out of the loop!"
"I knew he was crushing on her! Are they actually an item now?" Stacy had been dating a guy in Big Tree, one of the larger towns in the next county over. It had been a bit of a scandal for a while, given that Big Tree and Owl Creek were sports rivals. But the guy had moved down to Seattle and that had been the end of it.
"Maybe in Pete's mind! He's been trying to impress her since the break up. Why else do you think he would risk bringing all that beer to a casual bonfire?"
"Well, shit" You said. Last thing you wanted to do was cause a rift between your group of friends over a petty love triangle. But your further thoughts were interrupted by a soft glow up ahead. The Point wasn't fully lit, but there was a small United States Forest Service monument with a plaque on with a bunch of boring information about the explorers who found it and it's significance to the biosphere or something. There was a concrete landing next to the actual point where you could look out over the gorge and the lake, complete with railings, benches and a single solar powered light post.
"Sweet!" Keanu said, "I was tired of walking anyway." The two of you picked up the pace, but as soon as the landing came into full view you both stopped.
There, sitting on the bench across from the dim light, was the vague silouette of another person.
"Hold up, Keanu said, sliding his backpack off and retrieving the magnum, "Just in case".
You nodded silently as your friend shoved the firearm into his back of his pants, flipping his shirt over it. With a nod of readiness from him, you both slowly proceeded forward.
"You guys can stop being sneaky. I've heard you both coming for like fifteen minutes" The stranger called out. The voice was airy with a very slight nasal twinge to it. There was a flick of light that lit up an obviously feminine face as the stranger lit a cigarette and took a drag, the embery tip blazing somewhat ominously in the shadow.
"Hey, we don't want any trouble!" You called out, holding a hand in front of Keanu's chest while you ascertained the situation.
"And there won't be any. I don't bite, kid" The woman's voiced sounded bored, maybe annoyed, and with a nod from Keanu you both moved forward slowly, exiting the woods and stepping onto the overlook. Your flashlights danced over the woman's figure; limp brownish red hair, a oval face with dark, brooding green eyes, pouty lips, a slight dash of of freckles, what was clearly a joint and not a cigarette hanging limply from her lips. She was wearing a leather coat that concealed her arms but did little to hid her not inconsiderable bust that seemed poorly restrained by a gray top, and her jeans were ripped and torn in several places all the way down to her seen-better-days sneakers.

"Christ! Get the light out of my eyes!" She hissed, and you and Keanu quickly clicked off your flashlights, both muttering an apology. The three of you stared at each for a moment before she made a sarcastic motion for you both to sit down, which you did, cautiously. The wind and rustle of leaves filled the night, the woman pulling out her phone and staring at it for a few minutes before clicking it off and sticking it in her pocket, taking another drag on her blunt before staring up at the sky, letting her drugs hand idly from her narrow fingers. In the dim light you could see the smoke curling off into oblivion.
"Hey" Keanu suddenly blurted out, "I know you"
"Oh?" The woman replied, never moving.
"Yeah, you're that chick that works at the gas station out by the highway! It's Allison Pricefield, isn't it? Graduated a couple of years ago?"
"That's my name. Apparently." It was hard to tell through the sarcasm but you detected a bit of bitterness in her voice. "And yeah. I've seen you both around. Also seen you both staring at my ass from your cars. And down my shirt. So hi."
"I think my mom goes to church with your mom. It's,,,Amber, right? And you've got a little brother? Dad works at the mill in Big Tree?" Keanu continued to press her, despite her obvious attempt at baiting both of you. This was his thing when confronted with strangers, he always tried to press for some form of familiarity so that he didn't feel so awkward. And if this was Allison Pricefield, you were in the presence of one of Owl Creek's Druggies. And outside of the marijuana, there was no telling what she could be on.
"Five for five. Way to be. You think if you get six maybe I'll suck you off for a dime bag or something?"
That shut Keanu up.
"So", Allison said matter of factly, sitting up straight again and fixing you both with a curious stare before taking another hit, "Why are you two all the way up here? Looking to get some quality fucky fucky time in where you thought no one would be? Romantic date?" Her eyes twinkled mischeviously in the dim light of the light post.
"What! No! No. We're out here because of some friends!" You blurted out, "We're here on a dare, that's all!" Your answer didn't seem to satsify her.
"Boring. But I guess so was I back then. Now it's just come here, sit for a couple of hours, get high and go home. Hell, I probably still am boring, I just wear it better!" She said with a harsh, almost hateful laugh, flaring out her jack and and shaking her breasts at both of you in a very un-ladylike manner. You were weirded out but kind of turned on. It was true you and Keanu had scoped Allison out more than a few times at her workplace. This though, this was pretty amazing.
Allison smirked at both of you before leaning back, taking another long drag off the dwindling roll of paper that sent her mountains rising and falling. You figure Keanu must have been choked on his own drool as he was suddenly struck by a coughing fit. You shot him a glance to make sure he was fine before shifting in your own seat to hide your growing erection.
"So, uh, Allison. Is this what you do every night? Come out here all alone just to get high?" You asked. Honestly, weird as it was, you were glad for this very strange turn the night had taken. Maybe talking with her would make the night go by faster. Plus the more you stared at her, the more you stared at the marijuana she kept smoking so damn sexily. It was kind of making you want to give it a try...But your thoughts were interrupted by her reply.
"Only when the moon is full. Wasn't really my choice, but I guess this is what I was destined to be" You could almost feel the hate and bitterness in her words.
"What do you mean by that?" You asked.
Allison stared at you for a moment before taking another deep, sexy breathe. And then she... indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
