Allison stared at you for a moment, taking another deep, sexy breath before leaning forward, holding her hand out to you, the diminishing joint held skillfully between her middle and index fingers. Her dark nail polish weakly reflected the dim light, and her face was dead serious, those deep green eyes staring directly into yours.
"Take a hit, and I'll tell you exactly what I'm doing here" The woman's voice was quiet, yet full of determination. In the dim light you could see the dead seriousness in her eyes, you could smell the smoke coming off the paper, the burning plant within. You could feel the temptation, not just for Allison's explanation but because a part of you really just wanted to cut loose. You only got one of these kinds of summers, after all. Keanu must have seen the look in your eye because he shot off the bench and tried to smack Allison's hand away.
"Fuck that! Get that shit out of our faces! Logan, don't do it man!" You could see Keanu's face taut with anxiety, though you found it a little hypocritical that he'd so violently reject marijuana, yet have no problem taking part in under-age drinking. And you knew why.
"Ke, I don't have to worry about random spot checks from my university. I can do whatever I want!" You said calmly, reaching out and plucking the stub of a roll from Allison's fingers. She leans back as you inspect it, her pretty face never losing that look of dead seriousness. Every now and then her eyes flickered towards the tree line, but the largely remained locked on you. You stared at the rolled piece of paper for a momet, casting one last look at Keanu who simply shook his head, before you took a long drag.
Your body recoiled immediately, not prepared for the heat and smoke. You began coughing.
"Hold it in. You cough out all the smoke and it won't work" Allison said, her eyes still locked on you. You did as she asked, forcing your body's reflex to cough out the smoke. As soon as your body stopped shuddering, you felt the effects. Lightheadedness, a slight tingling sensation, but nothing else. You were actually a little disappointed as you flashed Allison a grin and handed it back to her, your fingers brushing against hers and the touch seemed electic. She paid it no mind as she turned to face Keanu, the joint pointed towards him.
"You really should try it." She said, and her voice was almost...pleading? There was a twinge of desperation in it, and the disappointment was clear in her eyes when your friend batted her hand away and moved to sit on the far bench. "Well, just remember that I tried", she said, before she tossed the blunt to the ground and stepped on it with a shoe, smuching it out.
"You said you were going to tell us why you were really out here" You prompted.
"Yeah." She sighed, "Yeah, I did. It's going to sound weird but I promise on my life that every word of it is true". This was so weird, she was like a whole new person now.
"It was about a year ago, I came here with my best friend and our girlfriends. We were touring the state, a fun little summer break after the hell of college finals. I was studying engineering at Cascadia State University and just needed a break. I'd never been here until that moment"
"Bullshit!" Keanu hissed, "Your family has been around here all my life!"
"That's just what you remember, kid" Allison tossed back, before continuing on, "Back then, my name was Bruce Cunnigham. My best friend Jason Knowles, and our girlfriends were Kathy McClane and Jessica Young"
"You're a trans?" You blurt out, and Allison fixed you with a evil look.
"Listen, if you keep interrupting, you're never going to hear it. And you need to hear it, okay?" Annoyance was creeping back into her voice. You apologized and told Keanu to keep his own mouth shut.
"Anyway. We made a unplanned stop here, the girls had to pee and we needed to stretch our legs, so we parked down at the trail head, it was close to getting dark but we wanted to try the trail. We took too long, the sun was going down by the time we got here, so we didn't waste anytime taking a few pictures and being disappointed by the dumbass plaque. I decided to break out the Mary on the walk back, it had been awhile and I felt the need for a hit. I was taking a drag when it happened, when we were attacked. You guys have heard of the Wackerknobs, right?"
"For fucks sake!" Keanu cried out, "Logan, let's get out of here man, she's just pissing around! We'll do the stupid dare another time, ok?" Keanu stood up from his bench and walked over to the edge of the woods, "C'mon, let's go!"
"No dude, I want to hear this" You said. You knew it had to be total bullshit, but there was just something about her voice, her looks, you were more than a little seduced and interested.
"Fuck me, seriously" Was all your friend said before he marched back to his bench.
"Again. Every word is true. We were a little ways back down the trail when they just fell on us, one for each of us. They were about the size of dog, but they looked like...I don't know it was dark. They had devil like tails and webbed arms, like a flying squirrel, and they were gray with these red markings all over them with faces like a those grinning faces on a Indian totem pole. They were just all over us, hissing like a cat, and then the one of me bit me! It bit me right on the goddamn neck!" Allison pulled her hair out of the way and revealed her neck, a finger pointing to a patch of flawless skin, "And I passed out"
"Unbelievable..." Keanu scoffed, crossing his arms and making the 'let's get out of here' eyes towards you, but you ignored him.
"When I woke up" Allison continued, her voice trembling a little bit, "I was like this" She gestured to her body. "I went from six foot one to five foot four, breasts, pussy, everything. And I was surrounded by strangers. Where Jessica had been, there was a little boy, looked about four. Where Kathy had been there was a older man that looked like a lumberjack, and where Jason had been was a woman that I'd soon come to find out looked a lot like me. And they all woke up the moment I did. So on top of instant gender changes, the real scary thing was that they acted like it was completely normal!"
"People just don't change gender. Or age backwards" Keanu said, rolling his eyes.
"I tried explaining what happened but none of them remembered. I tried the whole rest of the walk back to our car, which had changed from a Nissan Sentry to a big Chevy SUV. I tried forever to try to see if any of them remembered, I even tried running back up here, but dear old 'dad' stopped me. And then we drove home. To a house I had never been in, in this podunk little armpit of a town I'd never heard of. And it was like we'd been here all of our lives!" A tear rolled down Allison's cheek and she brushed it away with a sniffle. "Instead of studying for engineering, I wasn't even enrolled! And when I tried calling all the numbers of our previous families, all I got was "I don't know anybody by that name" and a dialtone. My own mom hung up on me after telling me I didn't exist!"
You were still not buying it, but this was one hell of a story.
"Over time and constantly trying to convince this new family, my new parents, they screamed in my face that I had to stop because I was putting 'dangerous thoughts' into the mind of the little boy that used to be Jessica. I said I wasn't, that this was wrong and we were not supposed to be a family. So they kicked me out and told me to not come back until I stopped acting like a lunatic. Talk about judgemental, right?" She sniffed again, "So that's when I got the job at the gas station, I had a credit card that managed to get me a piece of shit trailer in the trailer court outside of town. So now my life is nothing but ass grabs and turning over my paycheck to the asshole landlord. Whatever I have left is for food."
"So...If you used to be a man, now you're a woman...And your friends became your mom and dad with no memory of who they were...so why do you come out here?" You asked, still curious despite the incredibly crazy story.
"The only thing I can think of why I remember is maybe because of the marijuana. Maybe that one hit I got in saved me from completely turning into Allison Pricefield. That's the only thing I can think of. As for coming out here? It happened on a full moon, so every full moon I come out here and wait, hoping they'll grab me again. I hate being a woman. I hate this life! The only goddamn thing that helps anymore is the weed!" Allison's voice broke and the tears started flowing freely, she wiped at her eyes and choked back a sob, "Goddamn weepy ass emotions..."
"This is such bullshit, Logan. You can stay if you want but I'm getting out of here!" Keanu said.
"You shouldn't go back down the trail. They're already out there, probably tracking you since you entered the woods" Allison said, her composure returning.
"Oh, so suddenly you're the expert?" KEanu shot back. You were caught in the middle. The reasonable part of you told you to leave, get up and just go. But that reasonable part was outnumbered by the more intoxicated part of your brain. This was making for one hell of a little adventure.
