Chapter #4

Wits Challenge

Well, Mercurio knew at once that whoever this baron was...he was an idiot. After all, he only knew of three other Rat Clan members this baron could be speaking about. Griotte was also a baroness, so he clearly wouldn't have the clout or standing to execute her. That left two possible choices, both of whom Mercurio frankly found it hard to believe had been captured. After all, what person would dare execute the wisest and most omniscient fortuneteller in all of Armello? Or the blood-soaked hand of the Night Mother? It honestly sounded impossible. He needed to get more information on this! Of course, he likely wouldn't find more than mere rumors here. He needed to venture to the town under this moronic baron's jurisdiction!

With daggers in hand, Mercurio set out towards the nearby settlement. Sure, he most likely didn't NEED to intervene. Sargon could foresee anything, and likely already had his escape assured...then again, maybe that would only happen BECAUSE Mercurio intervened. Then again, if he didn't, then the...gah! Whatever! Meanwhile, there was no way Zosha would just get captured like that. Surely she had a plan. However, Mercurio certainly wasn't just doing this out of the goodness of his heart. He rarely did things out of the goodness of his heart. Agatha's words haunted him...sure, the Rot was revolting, but he'd seen what infected rats could do. If other, weaker minded heroes chose to succumb to it, he was going to need all the help he could get. And both Zosha and Sargon were VERY good people to have owe him a favor.

The journey to the nearby town was thankfully relatively peaceful. Sure, Mercurio kept a hand on his blade when traveling even before the Rot showed up, but only since then did leaving the clan grounds ever actually feel so unsafe! Perhaps that was why he wanted to take the crown, to make Armello safe again. Honestly, the rat's mind had so many twists and turns that it was sometimes difficult for even him to decipher the truth. Either way, he was glad to have made it without having to hide from a giant purple monster for once. Now, to find out what this baron was up to-oh. Well...this was an unexpected turn. He had apparently arrived just in time!

A crowd of rats was gathered around a stage where the baron in question stood, and so did a tied up Zosha, but there was no executioner oddly enough. As Mercurio worked his way through the crowd, he was astonished to see purple markings on the assassin's face! The smug, fat baron stepped forward and bellowed to the crowd, "People of the Rat Clan! I have gathered you all here to make an example of this would-be assassin! This so called "hero" of our people has accepted the Rot, and sullied our name! And for that, a fate worse than death awaits this traitor!" The man grins wide as he pulls out a small pouch. "One whiff of this, and you will be begging to serve the people you betrayed!" The crowd starts to cheer. Hmph, it's pretty clear that this baron has no intention of having Zosha serve anyone other than him. Mercurio couldn't help but chuckle. The stupid man hadn't even noticed that Zosha was already nearly out of her bonds! Of course, she'll still have a baron and his guards on her the instant she gets free...you should probably help.
