Melanie stepped through the door to Lisa Garner's life, and suddenly, everything went black. All sounds seemed to fade away to nothing. Then she heard a voice.
"Lisa, honey? We're here."
Melanie woke up and looked down. She was wearing a pink T-shirt with ponies on it, purple jeans and sneakers. But the strangest part was that she was strapped into an oversized booster seat, even though she was a fully-grown adult.
"Ready for kindergarten?" the voice said. Lisa could see the voice belonged to a young woman in the driver's seat, who looked like she was in her early 30s.
"Yes, mommy" said Melanie.
Lisa's mother got out of the car and undid the straps to "Lisa"'s booster seat. Then, to her surprise, Melanie was lifted out of the car by Lisa's mother, as if Lisa's mother possessed superhuman strength.
"My goodness, you're getting heavy," Lisa's mother said. "Don't grow up too fast on my account."
Oh, you have no idea, Melanie thought. She was getting a good look at her reflection in the car window, and could see that her hair was now done up in pigtails.
"Give mommy a hug before you go?" Lisa's mother said, still carrying Melanie in her arms.
Melanie shrugged and hugged her "mommy". Even if she was a complete stranger to Melanie, it still felt nice. Lisa's mother then put her "daughter" down, and pulled out her backpack. Lisa took it and headed towards the school building.
"Have a good day, sweetie!" Lisa's mother called.
Lisa saw all the other kindergarteners, all of whom she towered over. She smiled.
