Chapter #4

The beginning of a difficult journey

    by: Unknown
Once the enemies had been changed, Midna smiled and sat back to watch the fight. Link soon exited the cave and traveled deeper into the woods. It wasn’t long before he encountered a redead. Link hesitated at the sight. He knew the woods could be dangerous but he had never seen anything like this. He started to approach it when it suddenly shrieked, paralyzing him.

Link struggled to move, thinking about how dangerous this thing was. Before he could react, the monster raised its weapon and delivered a mighty blow on him. The hero fell to the ground, very injured. When Midna saw this, she thought for a moment. She had wanted to see Link struggle but this was too fast. After a moment, she sighed. The woman raised her hand and healed him. As Link was trying to figure out what just happened to him, he heard a voice.

“That’s the only help you’re going to get for this fight so be prepared this time. If you really want to defeat this thing, find its weakness.” Midna whispered to him. Link had no idea where the voice came from but nodded and looked at the redead once more. After a moment, he soon realized it was actually pretty slow.

Link moved behind it and approached. It screamed once more, paralyzing him again. This time though, it didn’t have enough time to turn around. By the time it did, Link regained movement and struck at the beast. He continued this process until the monster was defeated. Link smiled and continued on.

He eventually made his way out of the fog into a clearing. In his path stood two more redeads. Link thought about this carefully before coming up with a plan. He ran to their side and approached. Midna wondered what he was up to. When he was paralyzed, the monsters raised their weapons. Before the one in front of Link could hit him though, the other one brought down its weapon without thinking and hit its ally. The redead went flying to the ground, gravely injured. Link charged at it and finished it off before it could get up. Link soon finished the other one and continued chasing Talo.

As Midna watched him, she smiled. His plan before had been brilliant and was something she hadn’t thought of. She decided to make the next challenge a little harder by making the redeads a bit faster. When the hero got to Talo and the monkey, he encountered 3 of them quickly learned of their new speed. He started dodging their attacks, keeping an eye on all of them. In the process, the monsters ended up hitting one of them off the edge.

Another redead screamed and ended up hitting Link in the chest, causing him to fall backwards. This time the damage wasn’t as bad, but it still hurt a lot, making Link slower. As Link struggled, Talo couldn’t stand it anymore.

“Monkey, you need to help him!” Talo said. The ape nodded and struck at the cage. She did this a few times before it eventually broke. With the two redeads distracted, it gave the monkey time to jump onto one of them and block their sight. The monster screamed, paralyzing the monkey but couldn’t get it off. Link used this opportunity to strike at the redead, finishing it off. Once there was only one left, Link didn’t have much trouble taking it down, finishing the fight.

As Talo and Link started walking back, Midna clapped silently. She was impressed by his performance and wondered how he would do next time. As she watched, her two wolves appeared behind her.

“Mistress, why did you help him before? I thought we were going to cause him trouble.” Amy said, confused.

“I did cause him trouble. He had a harder time this time. And anyways, this challenge was just the beginning of what we’ll throw at him.” Midna said. Amy still wasn’t entirely convinced, causing Midna to sigh. “Listen, don’t question my decision. I know what I’m doing.” The two wolves nodded and disappeared from sight.

That night, Midna appeared in Link’s bedroom. She quietly approached her sleeping friend and smiled.

“You did well today. For that, I’ll reward you.” She said softly. Using her magic, the woman healed Link’s wounds. “It’s been so long since I’ve seen you, I’m happy to be back. Today was just the start though. You’ll face challenges far greater than what happened today, and I’ll be by your side the whole time…in a way.” Midna leaned in and gave him a kiss. “Sleep well Link. You’ll have a busy day tomorrow.”

The next day…
