They were kind of an odd group of friends. They all knew Sam, at least vaguely as the proprietor of the local movie theater, but things really started to congeal last year, when Sam met Jay at Daven’s Port Community College. Sam was taking some courses on film studies, and Jay was taking some on music theory. Sam played guitar, and Jay played base. They tried to make a band work, but Jay was more 21 Pilots, and Sam was more Joan Jett.
Around this time, Piper’s long term friend Zack hooked up with a girl named Alice. They had a habit of making her feel like a third wheel. It also shot down Madi’s attempts to hook up with him. Madi however, discovered Jay was a ‘passionate soul’ with ‘artistic vision’ and ‘dreamy eyes’. Sam would joke that Jay had his first groupie.
That left Piper as ‘the fat friend.’ A familiar role from days gone past. At least this group was super supportive. Especially Sam and Madi.
Having found her friends, Piper collapsed on the nearest bench, panting heavily. “Hey guys.”
“Hey Piper, good to see you.” Sam patted her on her blubbery back, even rubbed it a little, helping her breath.
“Yeah, we were worried you wouldn’t make it.” Madi said.
Jay just offered a wordless fistbump, which Piper took. There was a bit of an awkward silence, as Piper struggled to regain her ability to speak.
“How’s the diet going?” Sam asked.
“It’s been a week, and I’ve only lost three pounds.” Piper groaned.
“Three pounds in a week is fantastic.” Sam said, switching to rubbing her shoulders to get her spirits up. “Keep that up and that’s 12 pounds a month. That’s great.”
“Yeah, I wish I could lose 12 pounds in like...6 months.” Madi admitted.
12 pounds a month. That would take her like, 3 years to lose this weight! And that was supposed to be good? Piper had enough of her fat girl pity party.
“So what did you guys want to do at the pier anyway?”
Madi instantly brightened up, eager to share her hopes for the night. “We’re going to check out the carnival! Ride the ferris wheel. It’s SO romantic seeing the water at night.” She grabbed Jay’s arm, already staking her claim of WHO she’d be riding with.
Her audience was less enthusiastic. Piper scowled. Sam rolled her eyes.
“Madi...” Piper started, annoyance obvious already. Piper didn't do well with seats, or weight capacity or...stuff like that lately. Sam, moved to avoid a blow up or confrontation. Either Piper or Madi could easily end up in tears over this.
“Piper, it’s cool. We’ll go check out the games. I’ll win you a giant stuffed animal.” Sam said, her nasally Brooklyn accent emphasizing ‘animal.’
“Sam that’s...”
