Sixteen hours had passed since Kara was first afflicted by Nimball's paralytic gas and the effects had finally begun to fade. Meanwhile Ruby raced upstairs to her room with her new Supergirl doll under her arm, blissfully unaware that what she was carrying was the genuine article.
"Ruby, Dinner will be ready in 1 hour!" Sam called from the kitchen, happy to see her daughter so excited by the gift she brought her.
Kara tried breaking free of her constraints, but the elastic bands around her wrists and ankles proved more effective than she had anticipated at keeping her in place. At most she could turn her head, wiggle her toes, and curl her fingers into a fist, but she couldn't break free.
It was probably for the best though. Sam told Ruby that they would be eating dinner within the hour. Kara only had to pretend to be a doll until then, after Ruby left her alone she could fly out the window and head towards the DEO. It wouldn't be all bad, but with the gas wearing off it would prove increasingly difficult to stay perfectly still and not show any emotion.
*Wumpth*
Ruby slammed the door to her room, sealing Kara inside with the fifty-foot-tall Ruby. She jumped onto her bed, bouncing on her knees as she placed the box on top of her legs. Kara remained still, trying not to show any emotion as the giant preteen girl looked down at her.
"Wow, so cool! They got all the details right. She almost looks alive." Ruby said excitedly, peeling the top off of the cardboard box. Fresh air rushed into the packaging, washed over Kara, and sent a chill up her spine. She didn't show any form of response, gritting her teeth while she continued smiling at Ruby.
"These weak little rubber bands, can't hold back Supergirl." Ruby giggled, removing them one by one very quickly, even snapping one of them in the process leaving Kara shocked. In her shrunken state, she was so weak that she had trouble escaping a rubber band that Ruby could break without even trying. Was this twelve-year-old stronger than the Girl of Steel?
"Okay, let's get a better look at you now," Ruby announced, maneuvering her hand inside of the box around what she thought was a doll, making a tight fist around Supergirl's waist and abdomen as she pulled her out of the container. The young girl had a grip stronger than any alien Kara had faced before, making it difficult for the superheroin to breathe as she tried to continue her doll routine. Unfortunately, it was not one she could keep up for long as Ruby's curiosity leads her to inspect her new belonging.
"They captured her face perfectly, and the body almost feels real," Ruby said aloud, glancing at all the little features on the six-inch tall Supergirl as she tried to remain tense until Ruby did something unexpected. Kara felt embarrassed as Ruby lifted the back of her skirt, revealing her plain white panties to the younger girl. "That's weird. You think they would make these match the rest of her costume." Ruby said, delivering a swift flick to Kara's backside.
"Hey! What do you think you're back there?" Kara asked loudly, coming to life suddenly and spooking Ruby into dropping her onto the bed. Her shrunken form bounced off the mattress, landing her smack dab in the middle of Ruby's shadow.
"Wait, did you just talk?" Ruby asked, confused by what was going on. Why was her Supergirl doll talking to her? Was it a toy robot or something? No, she moved to independently for that to be true.
"Yes. Ruby, I need you to listen to me. I'm the real Supergirl. I was shrunk to this size by Jacqueline Nimball, a villain who worked with the Toyman earlier this year. She escaped from Van Kull and captured me in an ambush yesterday." Kara explained, but Ruby was still awestruck by the fact that her idol was now smaller than her foot.
"Wait, how did you know my name?" Ruby asked, followed by a moment of silence from the shrunken Supergirl. Unable to come up with an answer that didn't reveal her secret identity. Luckily, Ruby didn't dwell on this question for long before getting back to the issue at hand.
"Oh no, what can I do to help?" Ruby asked, eager to be of some assistance in what she assumed was Supergirl's darkest hour. Ruby jumped off her bed, her feet hitting the wooden floor with a powerful *thud* that Kara could feel shaking the bed under her. Finally Ruby turned around, looking down at the tiny woman from an even greater height than earlier.
Kara, unfortunately, was growing tired of being looked down upon, flying up to Ruby's head so they could have a face-to-face conversation. "Ruby, it's too dangerous. You could get hurt. Just open the window, and I'll take care of the rest." Kara said confidently, at least with as much confidence a six-inch tall woman could.
"I don't know if that's the best idea," Ruby said, worried about Supergirl's safety in a world built for people several larger than herself.
"Wait, what do you mean? You can't just keep me here like this!" Kara objected, interrupting Ruby before she could finish her thought.
"No, that's not it at all. I don't want to see you get hurt out there. I was going to say we should get Guardian to look into it. He could track Nimball down and figure out how to return you to normal. Then, wait a minute, are you, getting smaller?" Ruby asked, stopping in the middle of a convincing argument as she realized that Kara was only two-thirds of the size she was earlier.
Now at only four inches tall, Kara realized that Ruby was right as she started shrinking a second time. Watching from the air as Ruby seemed to double in size as she dwindled further to only three inches tall. "What's happening to me?" Kara asked in a panic. She hadn't shrunk in the last day, what was different now. Could it be that the box Nimball put her in was a containment field that kept her from shrinking more? No, she would have noticed it sooner. That's when it hit her, and Ruby who is a smart girl also figured it out.
"I think it's your powers! Using them must be causing you to shrink again." Ruby pointed out, while Kara continued to get even smaller. Now ruby was three times larger than when she first encountered her today, but she couldn't stop flying at this height. She'd fall to the floor at Ruby's feet, and with her Kryptonian powers acting up she might get hurt.
Luckily Ruby came to her rescue, laying her hand out under her and allowing Kara to land in the center of her palm like a firefly. Kara continued shrinking after that for a few moments longer, stopping at only one inch tall, only one-sixth the size she was when she arrived at Sam and Ruby's house.
"Wow, now you're super tiny," Ruby said, amazed by how small Supergirl had become right in front of her. Though it hardly helps raise Kara's morale about her current situation.
"I'm sorry, but there's no way I can let you go now. You can't fly, and somebody might step on you if you try to walk wherever you're going. National City needs you, so until then you can stay with me and I'll keep you safe for a few days. Hopefully, you'll grow back given some time to rest." Ruby reasoned, it was a good plan, but it was also one the Girl of Steel couldn't accept lying down.
"No, I can't do that! I won't let you keep me here!" Kara yelled, objecting as loudly as she could at her size. Standing up as she prepared to tell Ruby to release her out the window if she wasn't going to help her. Hoping that at top speed she could fly to the DEO and get Alex's attention before she became microscopic.
"I'm sorry Supergirl, you've given me no other choice," Ruby said, regretfully closing her hand into a fist around Supergirl. Squeezing her tightly without any attempt to restrain herself in case the shrunken Kryptonian was still strong enough to break free.
"Ruby, wha-what are you, doing?" Kara asked, pausing between some of her words as she found it hard to breathe all of a sudden, struggling to move the giant girl's fingers apart.
"I have to keep you safe, I promise I'll let you go at the end of the week if you get any bigger, But for now I'll keep you safe. And since I can't have you trying to run off, I'll have to keep you_________." Ruby said, shocking Kara with her choice of where she wanted to keep her.
1. "...inside of my sock." Ruby slips off one of her socks and could either decide to drop Supergirl inside or stuff her between her toes thinking that might be safer for her. She could also put on a pair of sneakers or Ugg boots as an added layer of protection and warmth.
2. "...between my buttcheeks." Ruby knows this isn't a preferred spot for Kara, but assures her that it will be a safe and soft place to live out her days while shrunk where she can keep an eye on her.
3. "...here with me and my mom." Ruby brings Kara downstairs and tells her mom everything that happened. Telling her she wants to keep Supergirl safe, suggesting they call Alex. Will Reign take over before she gets the chance? Will she call Alex? Or Will she say that Supergirl should spend a few days with them first?
