Chapter #4

Never Again

    by: Frost Author IconMail Icon
(Major spoilers for the October full moon and the endgame.)

First it was Aragaki, then it was Arisato.

How many more of her friends was Mitsuru going to lose? If she had her way, she was going to keep them close to her forever.

Fuuka Yamagishi hung up the phone, taking a seat next to Ken. Mitsuru's room had been quiet as no one k we what to say to each other.

"Yukari-chan's not coming after all," Fuuka said, creasing out her dress.

Ken spoke up next. "Sanada-san said he was busy at the gym, so I doubt he'll be here in time either…"

Junpei grimaced. "Man, what's up with those two? The dorm's closing today! With all our memories of this place, you'd think they'd want to see it off."

Koromaru whimpered.

"It can't be helped," Mitsuru said grimly. "They just see things differently. Everyone's started on their own chosen path…" She paused for a moment, forcing out her next words. "It's a good thing."

"…You're right," Fuuka responded.

Mitsuru looked over to the table where her friend's evokers lay. "I can hardly blame them. I seem to be getting busier and busier… If I didn't have to reclaim these, I might not have made it."

Another wave of silence fell over the room.

Junpei looked over to the table, noticing one was missing. He then looked around the room, desperate to change the subject. “W-what’s with the box, Mitsuru-senpai?”

Mitsuru’s face perked up slightly. “Oh, this?” She leaned over and placed the box on the table, grunting from its weight. “See for yourself.” She opened it then placed it on the table for the others to see.

It was a perfect scale model of the dorm.

“Whoa,” Ken hummed, leaning forward. “Is this…”

Mitsuru nodded. “I had it made when I heard they were closing down the dorm. I did everything I could to make sure it was accurate.”

“I’ll say,” Junpei responded, noticing the messy state of his tiny room.

They were so distracted by the model dorm building that they failed to notice Mitsuru slipping on a gas mask.

“I’m sorry, everyone,” she sighed as she pressed a button hidden in her pocket.

Junpei woke up to an earthquake. He felt as if the world was swaying in a rhythmic fashion. It felt unlike anything he had felt before as his stomach twisted with each swing. He ran to the nearest window, looking to see the chaos outside.

Instead, he found himself looking up at Mitsuru, who was now several hundred stories tall.

“Mitsuru!” he yelled, hoping she could hear him. She didn’t. He had no choice but to sit there and wait.

“Fuuka! Fuuka, wake up!”

Fuuka stirred awake, looking up at Ken, who was hunched over her. Koromaru was sitting not too far from them.

“What happened?” Fuuka asked, vaguely remembering the events from earlier.

Ken gestured behind her. “Look.”

Fuuka turned around, finding a giant Mitsuru staring down at them.

“Oh, good,” Mitsuru sighed. “You’re all awake now.”

“What did you do to us!?” Junpei yelled.

Mitsuru kept silent, her gaze piercing through the tiny people. “I used experimental Kirijo Group tech to shrink you all.” She seemed to have no remorse for her actions. “I don’t… want to lose anyone anymore.”

The shrunken people looked over to each other, completely in shock at Mitsuru’s explanation.

“You can’t be serious!” Junpei yelled. “We have lives! You can’t just keep us here.”

“I know it will be difficult to accept this sudden change in lifestyle,” Mitsuru began, her voice cold, practiced. “But I know this is for the best.”

“But what about Yukari-senpai and Akihiko-senpai?” Ken asked.

Mitsuru pursed her lips. “I had hoped to shrink them as well, but I suppose I’ll have to find another way to make that happen.”

“And Aigis?” Junpei spoke up.

As if on cue, Aigis entered the room. She stared down at the tiny humans on the desk. “I’m sorry,” she said, a genuine sadness in her voice. “I said I would protect Minato-kun. I have failed. I would not let the same happen to any of you.”

Mitsuru nodded gravely. “She will watch over you while I am not home. She will provide anything you ask for. However, her main task is to make sure you’re safe on my desk.”

They scanned the area, realizing this was a simple desk in Mitsuru’s bedroom. The edges of the table were walled off, high enough to keep them from escaping. As far as they could tell, they were in Mitsuru’s manor.

Mitsuru stood up, looming high above the desk, the tiny dorm, and its inhabitants. “I’m sorry, but I must go…”
