Chapter #4

Adult

    by: Unknown
Vixie was born after the wave, when mankind is said to have been like the great gods that tower over humanity. To be honest, she didn't believe the stories of the elders, mankind was always at the bottom of the food chain, and she wasn't so naive as to believe the myths thought up by the ancestors to explain their role in life. Never mind that her grandmother insists that she remembers living in the hall of the gods, not as a part of an expedition, but as the owners. And wearing the robes of the gods too! Because of their small size, and scarcity of usable resources, clothing was an entirely forgotten concept by the isolated pockets of humanity that existed.

"What does she know, the wrinkly old hag." Vixie mutters to herself, rolling a wild strawberry alongside her sister, Vera, the wild berries were the only ones they could really move without being noticed, and they were often as big as a person.

THOOOM

Vixie and Vera looked over, seeing the rapidly approaching feet of one of the gods, and abandoned the berry, running for the safety of the bushes, but their presence was ignored by the massive rabbit-lady, who was busy getting her hose out to water her garden.

"We've got to warn the tribe!" Vixie yelled, sprinting as fast as she could to the burrows, "The goddess brings rain!"

Their tiny naked bodies wormed their way down tunnels, shouting for everyone to get out, grabbing the younger tribesmates and forcing them to the surface, rapid thumping of the rain making everyone hurry. Once Vixie was sure they'd gotten everyone, she clambered up the base of the bush, nestling in a crook between two twigs, enduring the massive raindrops that threatened to drown anyone, or knock down any who got hit by them.

Once the rains were over, the tribe took account of who survived, and Vixie noted that her grandmother hadn't made it, and most of her sisters and cousins did. But life was cheap at this size, and fertile females were a prime commodity, so the tribe decided to cut their losses and move closer to the hall of the gods, seeing as the goddess didn't bring rain so regularly the closer to the structure they got.

Not even offering lip service to the dead, the miniscule tribe grabbed their spears (thorns) and began their trek to the new tunneling grounds. Vixie looking up at the goddess as she removed her massive vegetables from the ground, tearing up the area they had called home for the last four months, ripping the earth asunder as though it were nothing.

==================

Meanwhile, Jane Lapine was enjoying her gardening, but noticed something off about the soil, it appeared to have been tunneled by something. Too big for worms, too small for any burrowing mammal except....humans! She looked around quickly and eagerly, she'd only read about the former owners of Ert, such a strange name the humans gave this world, she thought.

Despite looking extremely hard and thoroughly, all she found were some dead humans, "Awww. They must've drowned..." She may agree that humans were not particularly intelligent, or clean, but some human keepers did discover that humans evacuated their tunnels whenever they felt threatened, those that didn't, often died. And no matter how filthy or a pest it was, Jane hated to see an innocent animal die so lonely, not to mention, she did find them to be fascinating to watch and learn about.

"Wait! I have an idea!" And she ran back inside to pick up her phone and make a call.
