Courtney reflexively nodded, although more out of panic than anything.
“Cool,” Sawyer pumped his fist into the air. “Tie-breaker!”
“We don’t even know who she is,” his twin sister Sabrina said.
Nadine bounded up. “Hi! What’s your name?”
“C-Courtney,” Courtney mumbled just loud enough to hear.
“Courtney. Awesome,” Sawyer’s attention immediately turned in the direction of the skeeball games. “Then we’re decided on skeeball first. Hope you’ve got a good arm Courtney.”
There were many games in the arcade that Courtney had never played before. Skeeball was one of them. She stared dumbfounded at the line of ramps leading up to the targets.
“It’s easy,” Marcus said, although he sounded bored. “You want to roll the balls up to sink them into those holes. Those tubes in the back and center are worth the most points.”
Courtney nodded again, then realized she had to put money in the machine. However she only had the cash her family had left her.
“You need quarters for this,” Nadine chuckled. “Here, I already traded mine and I don’t feel like playing.”
Courtney traded one of her fives for a handful of quarters. She was the last one to activate her machine, as Sawyer, Sabrina and Marcus were already playing. She watched how they shot the balls down the ramp before she tried it herself.
She didn’t have the best hand-eye coordination so most of her balls ended up missing their targets, falling down into the bottom hole for 10 points each. Marcus and Sawyer were highly competitive, with Marcus coming out with the most tickets after a round of plays.
“No!” Sawyer whined. “I was going to beat you this time!”
“It’s all in the wrist,” Marcus said, although for him it was a hollow victory. “Can we play something else? I’m tired of skeeball all the time.”
Sabrina was counting up her tickets, having edged past her brother in score. “What does Courtney want to do?”
“W-Whatever you want to do.”
“Aren’t you going to take your tickets?”
“Oh,” Courtney knelt down, tearing off the meager string of five tickets from the machine.
“That’s barely enough for a pack of gum,” Nadine said. “You’ll need more tickets for a good prize. I like the machines that give you prizes right away.”
“But yeah, Courtney,” Sawyer spoke up, “sorry for putting you on the spot earlier. What do you really want to do?”
