Chapter #4

Invisible

Security at Gerbert Gerbil's was a joke.

Sure, it existed, but it was powerless against you. They had hired guards to watch the place day and night. To protect the young patrons and protect the expensive equipment, animatronics and other assets. It would have helped them if they had competent guards.

When Gerbert's first opened you allowed yourself three days, separate visits at random times of the month to be in attendance. You would have stood out too much, with no direct child or family relation to the restaurant's usual demographic. That day guard, the slightly chunky woman, almost pegged you on your third visit. But by that point you had succeeded at memorizing your internal map of the establishment.

You had surreptitiously taken note of the security cameras. Estimated their range and coverage. Whoever must have built Gerbert’s must have been in a rush or failed to recheck their notes. Many items in the restaurant’s layout, from arcade machines to the play area, created many blind spots to hide from the cameras.

Add to this the seldom watched back entrance to Gerbert’s that faced the abandoned strip mall and you had your means of egress. Laying in wait, catching a lucky break from the pothead that went on a smoke break allowed you to jam the door lock. It remained undiscovered late into the night when you entered Gerbert’s after hours.

Compared to the bustle of the day, with screaming kids and the bleeps of video games and the routine shows of the Cosmic Crew, the restaurant was dead silent when you entered. Perfect, a quiet time to marvel at your conquest and privately delight in the darkened, motionless mascot eatery that had so captured your attention.

You stalked the back halls, keeping out of sight of the cameras as you added employee sections to your mental layout of Gerbert’s. A quick grand tour and you had your routes memorized. In the night Gerbert’s was yours.

Time to have some fun.
