Chapter #4

Getting In Character

Much to Roxanne's chagrin she was going to suit up in costume all day. The process alone took twenty to thirty minutes out of her day at the best of times. Less if she had help but Roxanne didn't have the friendliest relation with most of her other coworkers. Unlocking the door to Service & Storage Roxanne turned on the lights. All around her were spare costume parts for both workers and the animatronics. Fuzzy displaced parts of the Cosmic Crew were shelved around her, such as Gerbert's torso next to Fuchsia's wings, Moolia's tail and Hippo Don's great purple head, amongst others. Employee uniforms were in the back rack, among with other failed costumed characters.

Roxanne didn't remember seeing any of the spare costumes used. Some of them were animal mascots like Gerbert and the crew, some were decidedly more extraterrestrial. Rows of large black eyes stared back at her she found the means to get into character.

At first Roxanne had relished in the privilege of becoming such an integral cast member. The Bellixie character became an important part of the local Cosmic Crew mythos. Unlike the animatronics, which were prone to breaking down, Bellixie required human input to step into the costume and bring her to life.

Struggling into the outfit most days lessened the high she got from the attention of the role. The costume was effectively a white jumpsuit with pink trim, like a cross between sportswear and an astronaut's uniform. It was quite snug, spandex and velcro making up most of the outfit's material. Once Roxanne was sealed in she could barely breathe. Regulating her temperature was a nightmare.

Next Roxanne had to lace up the roller skates. She had lied about being a good roller skater during the interview, she hadn't skated since she was a kid but soon picked up the skill again within a week. The roller skates helped her get through the restaurant more quickly, often Roxanne would borrow the skates even when she didn't need them. At least the costume wasn't too large and bulky or rollerskating would be a nightmare.

The crowner to the outfit was the mask. Bellixie had the classic variety of wide, inverted teardrop shaped alien noggin with no nose, a small mouth and green skin with huge round black eyes. Completing this look was a series of green tendrils that acted like hair, for lack of a better term, bound back by a pink and white hairband.

When the suit was in place, Roxanne changed from a disgruntled wannabe actress into the giggly, hyperactive alien that was equal parts cheerleader, popstar and the worst parts of roller disco. Such was the result of characterization by corporate committee.
