...wearing the most curious contraption. It took a few moments to even process that what Marni had adorned over the commercial break was some kind of jumpsuit. Quickly, Alice's clothing keen eyes noticed the main material was some sort of polyester that hug close to the show host's large standing frame. A bit too closely for the young fashionista's tastes. In fact, the more Alice observed the cut of the outfit the more she found wrong with it! The neck line ran high enough to emphasize's Marni's bulging double chin, and the full length legs and sleeves were bunched up at the ankles and wrists as if tailored for someone quite a few inches taller.
The studio audience was certainly captivated, but the relatively quiet reaction betrayed that they were awaiting further explanation.
"Welcome back folks! Normally I'd have some sort of smooth segue for you, but I'm just as lost as my fans here. Dr Hu... Britney, care to give us all some details as to my attire?"
"Well Marni, I'll let the dress speak for itself for just a moment longer... let the suspense build up. Mind giving us a full tour of what you've donned for us today?" The still seat bound doctor signaled the host to give the crowd a quick spin. Despite Marni's confusion and curiosity, she kept her professionalism and quickly obeyed Britney's request.
Despite being a good deal smaller than her giant guest, Marni's slow rotation was not just showmanship. It took some time and effort for her to complete a full 360 degree spin. The camera crew took advantage of this to show a close up of several angles to both the television broadcast and the large display monitors to either side of the stage. Still confused coos of excited starting emanating from the crowd, and Alice was soon joining in with them. As Marni started turning everyone could see there was much more to this garb than met the eye. It only took a bit of motion for Alice to pick up on what was fundamentally different that she had missed before. Marni looked... blocky somehow! On the host's chest, stomach, biceps, and outer legs were angular lines that betrayed something lying beneath the fabric. Most conspicuous of all, there was a large pack strapped to her back with two large cylinders conjoined by a computer with a fancy looking display.
"While I've always fancied about modeling, this isn't exactly what I had in mind doctor! Obviously there's more to this get up than your average jogging suit smuggling some plastic plates and what appears to be a very expensive science experiment. Tell us a bit about all of this?"
"Absolutely Marni! Make your way over here and we'll get started." The rotund researcher patted the arm of the love seat and continued. "As you all are certainly aware my research deals with facing the challenges associated with obesity. Now unlike other doctors featured on daytime television programs, I'm not going to try to sell some fad diet or sketchy pill and then walk away with my cut. I'm a real doctor working with real science looking for real solutions."
Britney yielded to the brief applause from the crowd as Marni waited patiently next to her. Alice leaned forward, even more captivated by the doctor's words. As an alumnist of the prestigious Buttercombe Academy, she was quite familiar with women of (much!) larger size. In fact for a few years Alice herself had succumbed to the temptations and wore her fair share of extra pounds before shedding them in favor of more trendy and fashion forward clothes. They just weren't available in the sizes she had reached by the end of her sophomore year! Some of her classmates didn't quite share the same priorities though. By the time they walked for graduation, the majority of her friends and acquaintances had sailed north of the 300 pound mark.
Present day Alice slipped out of her mental sidetrack as Dr. Huan continued talking. "Well Marni, everyone in the crowd, and everyone watching at home; today I'd like to share with you one of my latest and greatest breakthroughs! I'd like to first mention that this was only made possible by the generous funding from the lovely people at Yeng Inc.I truly can't thank this company enough and I am so glad they share my vision. Marni, what you're wear today is an early prototype of Yeng-Huan Suspensor technology!" The crowd let out a wild reaction, led by those in the crowd that could guess at what the name hinted at.
"Britney, with a big sponsor and a big name like that, you have my full attention. Now, what have I signed myself up for here, exactly?"
"I'll show you, turn your back to me." Marni promptly did. The massive doctor leaned forward and deftly tapped at the screen on Marni's back a couple times, causing the backpack to begin lowly humming."Well Marni, tell me what how you... feel."
The crowd held it's breath. Alice was practically biting her nails in anticipation. Marni looked confused for a moment, then took a step forward and froze.
"Folks, I want to give you a full disclaimer here. I promise there is no gimmick here, no strings holding me from above, just this... suit." She took a few more amazingly long steps forward. A few gasps came from the crowd as they started to piece what this amazing suit could do. Alice cocked eyebrows on the brink of realization. Suddenly, the host smirked and exclaimed in her best hot-shot voice "Watch this!"
Suddenly, she jumped straight up. And not just a small hop you'd expect from a woman of her girth. She reached a clear two feet off the ground, possibly higher. She landed in a small stutter, not quite used to handling her newfound mobility, and crowd burst out in amazement. Marni gracefully spun around, putting to shame the first rotation she had made to display the attire. Going an extra half revolution, Marni stopped to face one Dr. Britney Huan, who was grinning like a mother watching her daughter walk for the first time. Marni spoke up, "Dr. Britney Huan, I am absolutely astounded that you gave me the privilege to wear and show such an amazing technology. I mean this in the best way possible; just what have you done here!"
"Thank you for your kind words Marni, it means a lot. As you can no doubt tell, and as most of the crowd seems to have figured out, the Yeng-Huan Suspensor technology in this suit does just that! It suspends the mass of the wearer to essentially counter-act gravity. Of course, this is a very early version of the tech, so I can't quite share all of its secrets. But as you can see it's stable enough for its public debut. Right now I have it calibrated to effectively halve your weight. Now I know a woman doesn't simply give her weight away, but I'm guessing at your size you're feeling quite the difference right now."
During Britney's speech Marni was busy playing around with her new freedom. She tried bouncing on the balls of her feet, swinging from side to side, and even a few more small hops. Every movement she made seemed so much easier than just five minutes ago. "Oh Britney, this is just beyond description! I haven't felt this light in years! Even before my days on the radio I don't think I could move around this easily! But tell me, there's got to be a catch. Is my bone structure gonna disappear if I do this too long?"
"Nothing that we know of yet. The main problem right now... " Marni was busy going for another high jump when an indicator light on the top of the pack flashed red and Marni's jump only cleared the few inches one would normally expect "...is that the power consumption is extremely high and thus one full charge will only last a few minutes."
"Well if that's all there is to worry about for now, then sign me up! As someone of significant size, I definitely understand how much easier this Yeng-Huan Suspensor tech would make life easier, and much more fun! Not to mention the kinds of applications this technology could have across all areas of industry and entertainment. Just wow. Again, Dr. Huan, I'm humbled and grateful that you chose to showcase your world changing technology here exclusively on the Marni Blake show. I can't wait to see where you take this one, and what other surprises you'll have in store for us in the years to come!"
"Thanks for having me Marni, it was my pleasure and I'll definitely let you know if I cook up anything else in the future!"
The crowd went wild as Marni struggled to do her transition over them, "We'll be right back after these short messages!
Alice blinked. Knowing she wouldn't find anything else at 11:30am to top a spectacle like that, she clicked the TV off. Amazing. Anti-gravity clothes... what a time to be alive. The curvy young gal sat back on the couch and pondered the clip she had just seen. She briefly questioned if it was real, but quickly dismissed the notion. The Marni Blake show was known for wild, wacky, and sometimes trashy segments, but that previous segment seemed impossible to have faked. The light-footed performance from Marni, the genuine reactions from the crowd, and of course the real deal Dr. Huan. Something about this technology had Alice very excited.
