This choice: Clean jammies—Zack wasn't gonna do jack today! • Go Back... Ah, clean jammies—has the concept of the lazy day ever been so perfectly symbolized by anything else?
Since this whole move started, Zack had been running himself ragged trying to get everything ready. Packing everything up, securing the apartment, having to deal with their respectively overbearing mothers voicing their constant disapproval of the idea, sometimes it all got to be a little much!
And sure he and Alice had been having fun these past few weeks, just sort of settling in and getting to know the city together. While that was all well and good, he had been looking forward to this day for what seemed like a really long time by now. Alice would be out all day, and he wouldn't be starting at the hotel for another few nights. That meant he had all day to do whatever he wanted—and all an overworked guy like Zack wanted was a day to lay around the apartment like a lazy bum!
"Alright sweetie, I'm heading out." Alice leaned over the couch and gave Zack a quick peck on the lips, "You're sure you don't want to come with me?"
"Yeah babe, I'll be alright." Zack put up a tough front, smiling boyishly as his girlfriend straightened up
"Okay... if you need me, you know you can—”
“Text you. Got it.” Zack pulled out his phone for emphasis, “Al, baby, I’ll be fine.”
“Okay but—"
"I'll be alright, Al." Zack said with a little laugh, "Trust me, I'm a big boy. I can feed and take care of myself."
"Mostly."
"Mostly."
"I don't know, it just... it'll be so weird being apart." Alice said sentimentally, "I mean, we've spent the past few weeks together every minute and it's been so great."
And it had been! Don't misunderstand, Zack was more than happy to spend every minute he could with Alice! But when given the option, it was important that he get some time to... y'know, be himself. By himself!
"I know." Zack sat up and gave his girlfriend a longer, more intimate kiss, "But I'll be alright."
The two lovebirds gave their final, wet, open-mouthed goodbyes for another minute or so before Alice checked the time. Smiling awkwardly, she shuffled out the door. And while he wasn't particularly proud to admit it, Zack eagerly shut the door behind her.
Finally—a chance to be free!
***
"I'm Cass Morgan, and this is your Morning News."
Okay, so... maybe he'd forgotten how to be free.
It had been so long since Zack actually had some time alone that he'd... well, forgotten, exactly, how to be alone.
Which was funny because, as the youngest in a family of five in a crowded apartment, he'd always wished that he could be alone for just one second. And then, when he started dating Alice, she moved in not long after. And with his work and his friends, Zack had slowly just let it pile up! And now that he was alone, all by himself...
What exactly did people who didn't have a full-time job and a girlfriend do?
There was always XBox—he had fought so hard to keep that damn thing, and it was one of the first things he'd plugged up to the TV.
Maybe his friends were on? It was pretty early, and most of them were bums. He could go for a round of Call of Duty.
Of course, he was pretty hungry. Maybe he could grab a bite?
Then again, both of those involved moving. And on a lazy day, moving was pretty much the last thing he wanted to do.
There was always TV. He missed TV. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
