In the year 2150, a viral infection broke out across the world that cause 85% of the male population to rapidly shrink to near microscopic size. Professor Connor Maxwell, a genius in the field of genetic engineering managed to synthesize a cure before his untimely shrink that managed to save the remaining males from the virus. Though his efforts saved the human race from a near extinction event, a new power emerged from the power vacuum left behind by the virus.
Women became that dominant sex on the planet, new laws were immediately implemented. As the female sex gained power, males in turn lost their status, becoming nothing more than breeding stock as their numbers barely reached 10% of their original population. Another unfortunate side effect of the virus was that the males would become sterile after reaching the age of 25, making them a hot commodity before their coming of age but became useless afterwards and treated as slaves. Any male below the age of 25 on the street would be captured then auctioned off to the highest bidder.
As for the shrunken males, a few curious scientist searched for them but only a few were ever found alive and most assumed they died off, so they were thus forgotten.
Except they managed to survive and thrive. Unbeknownst to the world, an advanced, microscopic alien race had been living on Earth for millennia, colonizing compatible human host for resources and when the male population unexpectedly shrank, the aliens quickly integrated them into their civilization. Their technology was 200 years more advanced than even the top of the line equipment produced by the military.
The aliens though, began to die off as human disease carried by the males caused an epidemic that destroyed their civilization. When the last of the benevolent aliens passed away, the males became the sole inheritors of their technology and ideology, so they decided to complete their benefactor's goal of colonizing habitable planets, beginning with what was once their own.
Thus they began to work in the shadows, turning average humans into habitable colonies and using them to help achieve their goal of intergalactic travel by nudging them into the right direction. They were no longer human but not alien either, something below the view of their gigantic counterparts.
