Chapter #4

Brave the New World

Mark was trembling with excitement at the possibilities of the modified portal device.

He switched off the TV and stared at the device lying in his palm. The uses for such a device were endless as the night sky as he could go anywhere in the world with it. Though the danger of the device could have horrible consequences in the wrong hands, he was thrilled with what he could do with it.

Going to his room, Mark closed the door behind him and wondered what he should do first with it.

"Lets try to portal somewhere close by first. I don't want to end up stuck in China for the first jump." Mark's first thought was of the park as it was within walking distance of the house and his neighbors portaled there all the time. Nodding his head, Mark opened a portal to the park and the green scenery greeted him when he walked through it.

"Hold on. Why is everything so....... big?" he wondered and looking around, realized that his exit portal was ant-sized. The greenery around were tree-sized stalks of grass and Mark was stuck beneath the canopy. "What the hell. I didn't set it to shrink, I only wanted to jump here." He growled in annoyance at the device's first screw-up already, then sighed. "Hhaaaa. Well I just need to fine-tune this thing when I get back."

Holding out the device, Mark created another portal back to his room but he hesitated to go through it. Making sure that the exit portal wouldn't turn him microscopic, he stuck his head through the portal. It was his room and he was back to normal size for a moment. Sighing with relief, he went through the portal but the moment the modified device crossed the event horizon, something went wrong.

"Ohh, shi-." he muttered before the white light engulfed him and the world vanished before his eyes. Mark felt his body shaking and throbbing uncontrollably as the portal threw him to god knows where and he closed his eyes to block the out the blinding white light. Something was burning his left hand, as pain roared through his body and he spasm uncontrollably in the white space. He was blacking out from the pain and he struggled against the agony as the portal threw him through it.

Something changed as the blinding light dimmed and Mark felt the wind whipping past. Opening his eyes, Mark saw a scenic prairie spreading out below as he fell uncontrollably towards the ground. His mind went blank for moment, taking in the situation before his eyes, then his mind kicked into over-drive. Reaching out with his left hand, Mark tried to activate the portal device when he realized that the device was missing. He whipped his head left and right searching desperately for the device but it was no where in sight as Mark plummeted to the ground. Mark noticed something shining in the palm of his left hand out of the corner of his eye.

Mark stared at his palm in shock, because embedded in the center of his left palm was the portal device. The device must have fused with his hand turning the jump and that explained the burning pain from earlier. Looking pass his hand, he saw the ground was rushing right at him. He held out his hands in a futile gesture to ward off the impeding impact when a portal open up directly below him. He only had time to gasp before he entered the portal at terminal velocity and exited out back into the air.

Looking back, he watched the ground shrink away as he was now flying up rather than down. The portal had inverted his fall at the last minute, saving his life. "What the hell." he murmured before the pull of gravity had yanked him back towards the ground. He twisted around to face the upcoming ground and tried to repeat what he did before.

"Come on. Come on. COME ON." Mark roared trying to open another portal, but it didn't happen. He only realized that he was still ant-size at the last minute as the grass grew bigger than him right before he hit. "Nononono-." he cried before he hit the ground with a BAAAMMMM.

He impacted terra firma HARD. The blades of grass cut his tiny body as he sailed passed the giant stalks and slammed into the ground. He got the breath knock out of him on impact and his body bounced a couple of times as he desperately rolled to kill some of the fall's momentum. He came to a stop finally, bruised and winded as he tried to get his dazed mind to understand what was happening. First) the portal device brought him someplace he's never seen before. Second) Said device is now fused with his left palm and he didn't know how to activate it. Third) He was still ant-size when he landed, so that probably saved his life as his normal sized form would have died on impact or have every bone broken.

He broke out laughing at how his shrunken sized had saved his life, but now he wondered what was going on.

Mark sat up slowly, wincing as his cuts bleed and his bruises complained but he knew was still very much alive. Looking up, rays of harsh sunlight shone past the canopy created by the tall grass. "Let's get my bearings first." he muttered and climbed up the nearest stalk of grass. Pulling himself up, he looked in awe at the never-ending expanse of grassland and he wondered where in the world he was.

Looking down at his left hand, Mark tentatively touched one of the buttons on the device but nothing happened as the device gave no sign of life in his palm. "Crap." he muttered. Mark now had a hacked, broken portal device fused to his left hand while he ant-sized in the middle of nowhere. This situation couldn't get any worse than it is. He should've never thought that because any situation can always get worse and he just asked for more trouble.

While Mark was fuming over his situation, he didn't notice the titanic shadow slowly creeping towards him from his blind spot. It was only when it covered him that he turned but it was too late as a giant hand caught him in a vice.

Mark struggled to escape from the iron grip, but it was futile as his captor brought him towards their face. Mark stopped struggling when his eyes fell on his captor.....ahem....captress's face. She was an absolute beauty with dark, obsidian eyes and long, silky black hair that framed a face fit for a supermodel. Mark's eyes traveled down her tan body, noting all the small and big details, such as her watermelon-sized breasts that formed massive ravine below him. But, back to the important stuff as Mark watched his captress's face scrunch up in a puzzled expression before breaking out into a killer smile.

"Well, well, well. What do we have here." she purred.
