Red soon learned that whinnying would earn him food, but only once every so often. But Rick, with increasing desire to not have Red whinny at him every half an hour, hoped that by giving Red more food, he would shut up the horse. Anne came again for spring break and tried to ride Red, who, this time, could barely manage to leap the second hurdle. Anne felt sorry for Red and gave him more oats to compensate for her own negligence.
Becming increasingly bored, Red managed to wheedle out more food from Rick. Red also found that grass would occasionally allay his hunger, but not for as long as the oats would. For a while, Rick's plan for getting Red to stop whinnying worked, but eventually and periodically, he would have to increase the amount of oats he fed Red, from one scoop to one and a half, to two, to two and a quarter, slowly until he was giving Red three scoops of oats to Red every five or six hours during the day.
The consequences on Red's waistline were swift and relatively dramatic. Red went from being a defintively toned and muscled agility horse to a soft, round butterball. After a few months, Red stopped prancing up and down and merely whinnied to have Rick feed him. Anne came again after a couple of months of being away and tried to ride Red on the obstacle course. Red barely made his way over the first hurdle before giving up. Anne again felt pity on him and filled his bucket full with oats and gave him a new incredibly sweet pastry that Red devoured.
Rick one day noticed Red trying to run. It was a clumsy run that made Red tired after only 30 seconds. Rick walked over and habitually fed Red a liberal three and a quarter scoops of oats before he absentmindedly went back to work. The last time Anne ever rode Red on the obstacle course that she made, Red couldn't even jump the first hurdle. He hit it and hurt his leg, an injury that caused him to lie down for a couple of weeks to recuperate.
Red didn't see the rural veteriarian very often because Rick didn't own a horse trailer, and he found it a pain to borrow one. But today, Rick managed to procure a horse trailer and an appointment to the vet's office. Red apparently needed some shots, required by law. So Rick attached the trailer to his truck, enticed Red in with a honey bun, and drove to the vet's office.
