Chapter #5

13-18 (Teen)

Original Author: Detective Barricade

You have had it up to here with all the short jokes people think are funny to slap on you. Of course you don't want to hurt said people, or anyone for that matter. You want to be tall. Really tall. Like tall enough for people to think twice about trying for tall jokes. Like a mile! ...or maybe more! ...Okay, you just want to make up for all the years of being 4 feet tall. You hadn't grown since grade school even though your 18 year old body has blossomed in other ways.

One day, while rummaging in your favorite old/used book store, you come across a particularly old and heavy tome. Adorned with odd symbols, suns, moons, and stars, it clearly looks like what one would expect...of a spell book. Perhaps some magician threw it here by mistake? Surely it can't be a real spell book...could it? Every idiot knew magic wasn't real! ...Right? You ask the shopkeeper, "Hey, when did this book come in?" and he gives you a stare like you had two heads - neither of which screwed on right as he replies, "I've never seen that book around here, and I go through every book that comes in this store. You can have it if you want it. Consider it a gift if you like."

You thank him and buy another random book from him, letting him keep the change. You simply couldn't just not give the kind old man something, hardly anyone seems to come into his store. You leave and head home...after a bite to eat. Your stomach is now protesting about not getting nourishment for itself while your mind was getting at least something for itself. And thus, you find yourself at McDonald's soon after.

Once your stomach is satisfied with the Big Mac and fries you eat, after having to argue with the cashier over not wanting a stinking Happy Meal, you finally head home. Once there, you head into your room and close the door to read this book in private.

As you read, you quickly come to realize that this thing is the real deal. ...Or a really elaborate hoax. Sadly nothing about a Philosopher's Stone, the holy grail of magical items said to be able to turn nearly anything into gold and grant immortality, but then you remember this is a spell book. Not an alchemy book. No real wand-waving required, the spells supposedly work just fine without verbally saying them so long as the caster focuses on it, which is a relief so as to not look like an idiot.

There's a wide variety of spells available as well. One for an instant meal and/or drink, one to clean near any mess, one to be able to hold one's breath indefinitely, even one to make it practically rain gold coins! The latter seems to infer that it'd do it for whatever currency the caster thinks of at the time. If Monopoly money, it'd be a lot of colorful paper bills. But one in particular catches your eye. "A growth spell, huh? Very interesting... And how thoughtful! It includes the caster's target's current attire! Oh, a girl could have a lot of fun with this thing... May be a good idea to memorize the spell in case the book doesn't grow with me. Some of these other ones might not be a bad idea either."

You crack down and study the spells in the book until you think you are ready...
