Chapter #4

The jackal's rambling isn't as crazy as...

    by: Unknown
"...aren't you taller than this?"

That was the first thing Dana'd said to me in an hour that wasn't an apology. We'd taken ourselves to the lower lounge to search around for guests after me and the jackal's little quarrel, and I was just getting calmed back down, up until she'd told me that.

"What're you talking about?"

"You seem a bit shorter to me." Her winged hand came down on my back, and she carefully took me up of her shoulder to dangle me in front of her head, eyes looking me over with concern.

Maybe it was just her saying it, but when I really thought it over, her head seemed a little bigger than I'd last remembered...

"Can't be." I said. I pulled out my trusty tape measure and drew out some length, and she set me down on her shoulder, giving me enough stability to measure myself.

5'5.

"This...this isn't right!" I insisted, lining myself up with the tape another time, but the height came out the same. Seven inches shorter than when I'd checked myself last month.

She brought her hand down, roughly measuring me up. She didn't look too pleased. "Looks like it. Eight or seven inches, is that close?"

"But it's not possible! You can't just shrink seven inches!"

Dana's eyes grew more concerned. "Wait a minute...Nathan, you don't think it had anything to do with that crazy jackal, did it?"

"Nope. I don't, as a matter of face."

"Well, I don't like the looks of this." She said, pushing me down so I was sitting. "Hold tight. I think we've gotta find somebody who can help us!"

"I'll...uh...Eva! She can help us!"

"What do you expect Eva'll do?"

"If she knew the sandwich I had for lunch today, I think she can help with just about anything!"
