Aya's father and brother must have been out hunting still, as they weren't home when the three girls got back to the cave. Aya, Anni, and Agelica put their bags of fruit down, and Aya collapsed onto her back from the arduous journey, panting in exhaustion.
"Tired just from walking, little cave-hippo?" Anni smirked, seeing her little sister's larger, plumper belly rise and fall from Aya's panting breaths. Aya growled at being called that; her sister always called her a cave-hippo to make fun of her weight, comparing her to one of the ponderous beasts that stayed in the valley during spring and summer.
"Anni, enough making fun of your sister." Their mother gently chastised. "We have enough fruit for today, so you and I are going to gather the vegetables."
"What about Aya?" Anni asked. "She'll probably eat everything in the cave if we leave her here alone." Aya, who heard that, stuck her tongue out at her big sister. Even worse, Agelica actually seemed to take this consideration to heart.
"I won't eat anything until dinner!" Aya then said, standing up with her plump body jiggling. "Is it ok if I go swimming instead? I'll be careful! I promise!" Her mother thought for a moment, but Aya's smiling, slightly chubby face eventually made her relent.
"Alright," She said, ruffling her youngest child's hair with a smile. "But be back before sunset. And only swim in the river, not the pond. Okay?"
"Mhm! I promise!" Aya said, and immediately waddled off into the valley. Her mother noticed she actually was starting to waddle, almost like a sow ready to give birth. At least she had plenty of meat on her for lean times...
