"Don't worry about that," Dad tells you, starting on toward the closet without you.
Something seems strange about his behavior, but you follow him anyway. After all, you don't want to get caught by Mittens. As you push through the carpet, you wonder if that was Dad's idea, after all. Why would Mittens go in the closet? You two should be safe until you can get Mom's attention.
But...what if she didn't notice you two? Or something worse? What if she did notice you and Dad but mistook you for two of the bugs invading the house? You shudder at the thought.
Eventually, you and Dad reach the closet, and you are both thankful to be on hardwood floor. It is no longer a struggle to move around.
Inside the closet, the light is off, and it takes your eyes a few minutes to adjust. You simply follow your dad until you can see what is around you. It seems to be Mom's closet more so than Dad's. She has racks of shoes, all neatly organized, as well as hundreds of clothes hanging up along the walls.
"It might be a while now," Dad tells you. "We should be prepared for when she comes, though."
"What do you mean?"
You watch your dad as he paces around, scanning all of his wife's shoes.
"Unless she goes somewhere again today, she likely won't be back in here until she leaves for work tomorrow," he answers. Then, he turns to you. "I'm going to look around. Your mom will be back for her work shoes tomorrow. Stay here. I'll be back soon."
You are confused, but you obey. You sit down against the wall and gaze up at your mom's shoe collection. After a minute or two, you realize you don't know which way your dad went. You can't see him anywhere, but you don't think much more about it until at least an hour passes and he still hasn't returned.
"Dad?" you call out, standing up. You receive no answer. "Are you still in here?"
You start to worry. Nothing has happened in the past hour, but where could he be? Is he too far away to hear you, even just in the closet? You stop and think about what you should do.
