Paul, my new friend had shared his name and the info that he was new in town and didn't know anyone, grinned again. I liked his goofy grin- much better than the uptight nervous look he had first shown.
"This is good." he said. I waited for him to continue, :"The appetizers, I mean. Much better than a full meal. I'm just starting a new job in a new town because I couldn't take the pressure at the last one. Never enough time to get the job done right, constant pressure. Too much overtime and not enough leisure. I used to run marathons. He patted his ample gut. Anyway new job and time to get back to mu old habits. Eating less these days and getting back to running. "So you run daily?" I asked in what I hoped was a disarming way while gesturing to the waitress for another round of appetizers.
"Working on it." he said. "You never think when you weigh 140 pounds, run 6 miles a day and eat whatever you like without gaining an ounce that you will gain 40 pounds and get winded climbing stairs. I thought that it would be a breeze and I'd just start running again but I'll get it back,
