Miles knocked in his friends Holly’s door as he yawned looking at his phone.
—Prologue—-
Miles and Holly were old friends since middle school. They had just graduated high school and were enjoying what might be their last summer together before going off to college.
Miles was a rather nerdy guy. Skinny and tall, but not very muscular. He spent more time with computers than sports and hoped one day to work for a high end tech company. Fairly average in appearance with short brown hair Miles never stood out in any crowd.
Holly was what many people would call goth or emo. She had pale white skin but jet black hair. Her nails were painted black and she grew them to sharp points. She wore black lipstick, black dresses, black heels, and fishnet stockings almost exclusively. She also wore a silver necklace everyday that had a pentagram pendant at its center.
Even though she dressed like this every day Holly never thought of herself a gothic or emo. She hated those stereotypes. Instead she claimed she was an actual witch and that her whole family was descended from ancient witches.
This of course led to her getting teased and bullied at school. Not just for her appearance but for her beliefs as well. Miles became her only true friend when he stood up for her one day and ended up getting beaten up by a large jock named Toby. Every since that day the two of them became really good friends.
Miles didn’t really believe in Holly’s witch stories but he did believe she was allowed to believe whatever she wanted and he didn’t judge her lifestyle. Holly knew this but his acceptance of her is why they became close friends.
—Back at Molly’s Home—-
Miles kept knocking on Molly’s door wondering why she wasn’t answering. They had made plans to hang out today and she even confirmed it this morning. It wasn’t like her to not answer...
Pushing on the door slightly he noticed it was unlocked as Miles slowly entered her house. He had been here dozens of times before but it felt weird coming in without permission.
Looking around the house seemed empty, no one answered when he called out. Yawning Miles felt a bit tired as he wondered if there was any sodas or energy drinks in their fridge. It was common for them to raid each other’s fridges so Miles tonight nothing of it.
Opening the fridge Miles saw the typical food fair Holly’s mom kept stored. However there was one thing out of place...
There was a soda...A Cherry Soda...It had a note tied to it. The note was fancy with cute letters like it was written to a crush.
“To Toby, thanks for all the memories I’ll never forget. I hope maybe to give an experience that you shall always remember as well.”
“What the hell?” Miles thought looking at the soda.
Toby was a bully from their high school. He tortured Holly, called her a freak, told her she looked like she escaped from a Haunted House. One day at lunch he shook up a soda and made it explode all over her.
They hated Toby together. He nothing but a jock asshole who found pleasure in tormenting those he felt different. So why would she be giving him a soda?
They had a graduation ceremony later this week and maybe it was supposed to be an ironic gift? Or maybe...
The thought hit his mind as Miles felt a singe of jealousy wash through him.
“Maybe she had a crush on Toby? Was all that bullying a secret message that he liked her? Did she secretly like him as well?” Miles thought to himself.
Part of him wanted to drink the soda out of spite now and leave...The other part of him just wanted a clear answer.
