"Oh, man, Nick..." Maya groaned, looking on as her "little" cousin paced about in the room. "We're practically specks..."
The point was hard to argue. Judging by their surroundings and the sight of Pearl ahead, Maya and Phoenix indeed appeared to have been shrunken down to a size best compared to something as puny as a grain of sand. How in the world were they supposed to draw Pearl's attention for a rescue...?
"We'll jump."
A moment passed. Phoenix looked at Maya to his side, unsure of whether he'd imagined her words or not.
"... Excuse me?" he inquired. Maya looked at him and shrugged.
"I don't really see a lot of other options, Nick." she said with an uncomfortable expression on her face. "Pearly's super huge, and we're super tiny. She's not gonna hear us if we try and shout or anything."
Phoenix wanted to argue, but the gravity of this situation was setting in, and he couldn't honestly dream up any counterpoint.
"... OK, fine..." he said, shuddering at the thought alone. "It's a terrible idea, but..."
"Trust me, Nick, I know it's a bad idea." Maya said, nodding. "C'mon!"
Leading the way, Maya ran toward the edge of the table's enormous plateau. Pearl was approaching their position.
"Wait for it..."
Phoenix had never felt more afraid than he did right at this moment. The drop down to the carpeted floor looked quite lethal.
"OK, go!"
Maya didn't really give him a chance. As she jumped from the edge of the table, Phoenix could feel his assistant's iron grip on his wrist. He uttered a terrified yell as he jumped forward, too.
Air whipped past them, their arc bringing them toward Pearl's channeling robes.
"Oof-!"
Scrambling frantically, Phoenix felt an overwhelming sense of dread. They were falling.
He and Maya screamed, their tiny voices piercing the air, but Pearl didn't seem to notice. Below, the terrifying sight of Pearl's sandals could be seen, approaching fast.
