Franziska von Karma was positively fuming.
For the past twenty-two days, the international prosecutor had been involved with a long-running investigation into the activities of a highly secretive social club believed to be affiliated with the worldwide smuggling ring she had been assisting Interpol in pursuing. She and her compatriots in the investigation had finally come upon a strong lead, following the trail until it lead Franziska to the arrest of a rather irritatingly uptight and egotistical woman suspected to be a major player in the smuggling ring's operations. It had taken a week and a half of near-constant work and several sleepless nights, but at last, Franziska had secured every last scrap of evidence and witness testimony she needed to bring the suspect to court, only to find herself facing down Phoenix Wright, the very same defence lawyer responsible for the end of her previously-perfect record in her prosecution career. Initially, she had rather enjoyed the idea of managing to secure the defendant's conviction and also have her own personal revenge on Phoenix for his damage to her reputation, but once the trial had begun, things took a turn for the worse.
In his usual fashion, Phoenix had gradually picked apart every last scrap of testimony from every witness Franziska had brought in, slowly but surely breaking her case down until there was nothing left, and in a truly intolerable manner, secured his client's acquittal.
Despite the fact that the trial's conclusion had in fact seen the true culprit found and arrested, Franziska couldn't have been less pleased with the outcome. As if her last three weeks of effort had meant nothing, Phoenix had once again defeated her, punctuating his victory with a carefree smile and a high-five with his assistant.
So, barely able to contain her rage, Franziska had attended to her duties regarding the witness indicted in the case and left the courthouse. She'd been so furious that she couldn't even muster the will to pick up her whip and take out her frustrations on Phoenix's face. As she exited the courthouse and made her way down the front steps, she didn't notice the car positioned in the parking lot, its driver window open to allow the person inside a clear shot at her.
Still occupied by her own thoughts, she also missed the moment that an unusual noise rang out from the car, which immediately started up and left the parking lot in a hurry.
Franziska flinched at the feeling of something striking her upper leg. A clattering sound followed, and she spotted a device of some kind -- a half sphere with three small points extended from its flat side -- tumbling down the steps before her. Pressing two fingers to the affected spot on her leg, she squinted for a better look. Several questions flitted through her mind at once. She could feel a small twinge of pain from her leg, like the three points on the device had just stabbed into her skin.
She'd only just opened her mouth to mutter something when a sudden wave of dizziness struck her. She swayed on her feet, clutching at her forehead. Her eyes fixed on the ground, she felt an unusual sensation overtaking her. It almost looked as if the ground itself was becoming further away... indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
