Chapter #6

Don't mix alcohol and shrinking

    by: NotImmediately Author IconMail Icon
"Whoa-... Easy, girl." Apollo said, hastily swinging an arm underneath Ema's shoulder as she stumbled forward and out of the car.

They'd come to the end of a very busy night of drinking for the detective. Ema had texted Apollo several hours ago to ask that he join her at their favourite bar for the evening. They did this often, usually when Ema had been through a rough week at work. Apollo didn't drink nearly as heavily as Ema did, but he was happy to come along all the same.

The car they'd been given a ride back to Ema's house in, -- a rather unremarkable one being driven by Klavier Gavin, who used the less-then impressive vehicle whenever he wanted to keep a low profile -- pulled away once Apollo had Ema clear of the curb.
Ema mumbled something indistinct as Apollo helped her shamble toward the front door of her house. It was a somewhat small home, fit for Ema and her older sister, who was enjoying her peaceful life now that she was out of prison.
Apollo had taken Ema's keys from her back at the bar. He pulled them from his pocket and opened the front door. He left the lights off; Ema always made her distaste for the sudden brightness clear otherwise.

Ema stopped him once they were into the hallway leading to her room.
"Bggrrsull..."
"... What...?" Apollo asked. Ema's head was hanging limply. He carefully lifted her chin up to help her speak more clearly.
"Bag..." she managed. "Air... sul..."
Apollo groaned. Ema was not a particularly easy drunk to deal with. At least Mr. Wright would just fall asleep.
"One more try?" he said.
"Bag." Ema repeated. Apollo nodded, suspecting that she meant her own shoulder-slung bag. "Air... Aerosol."
Apollo raised an eyebrow. He hesitated, but dug into Ema's bag all the same. Near the bottom, he found what she seemed to be mumbling about.
"This?"
Ema nodded, but this caused her head to drop back down. Her hair fell out of its knot and over her face. Apollo groaned again.
He helped Ema into her bedroom. It was a crowded place, loaded to capacity with all things science. He let Ema take a seat on the edge of her unmade bed.
"OK, what's this?" he asked, holding up the small spray bottle he'd retrieved from her bag.
Ema clumsily reached out to take it. Apollo was just expecting her to mumble something else when she suddenly raised the bottle and sprayed it directly into his face.
He sputtered, closing his eyes. "D-damn it, Ema, what-...?"

He suddenly felt strange. He clutched his forehead.
He wasn't drunk. It took way more than he'd gone through to get him drunk. So what was this weird feeling?
Without any further warning, he lost his balance and blacked out.

Apollo blinked a few times. His eyelids felt heavy.
What was going on...? He tried to sit up, but his body felt sluggish. For just a moment, he wondered whether he'd passed out at the bar, but as he thought it over, he remembered bringing Ema home, still relatively sober.

A sudden sound caused him to snap to attention, sitting bolt upright. The sound had been a deafening rumble of some kind that echoed all around him.
It was fairly dark. There was a dim light coming from somewhere.
He looked toward it and recognized Ema's desk. He felt a cold sweat break over him. What had he been doing? This was Ema's bedroom.
He practically jumped off his feet as the same deafening rumble roared into the air again.

He whirled around. What he saw caused him to outright scream.

Looming over him was a massive creature, its size positively unbelievable. It was breathing with a low growl, expelling a stale scent in his direction with every exhale.
He was stumbling over himself to back away when he felt his legs become caught up on something, and he tripped.
The massive creature shifted in place, and a thick lock of brown hair was shaken loose, dropping down to graze the ground.

Wait. Brown hair...?
Apollo's breath caught in his throat as he took a better look at the being looming over him.

"... Ema...!?"

You have the following choices:

1. The sleeping detective is awoken by his outburst.

2. Ema remains asleep.
