Between a rock and a hard place

As your back hit the shelf with a painful thud, the helmet rolled off its place and crash into the floor, missing you by mere inches. However, its movement seemed to trigger another device, its high-pitched buzz assaulting your ears. Worse, as you turned around to assess the damage, your foot struck a strange, three-part glass vessel lying on the ground and its clamped tube burst open with great violence. Immediately, the contents of the apparatus started to bubble and hiss as a light yellow cloud of gas started to build up inside.
