Chapter #5

Beach Blanket...Alien?

    by: Charon Author IconMail Icon
Y'La wrapped her arms around herself and shivered. "Brr! Cold! Gotta find land, get warm!" Looking out to the horizon, she spotted a strip of whitish-yellow. "Sand! Land!" Without another thought, she leapt into the water. Obviously, at least to natives of the planet, if the air was cold then the water would feel even colder. Her shriek echoed over the waves as the alien girl desperately windmilled her arms in a frenzied swim to shore.

Massachusetts wasn't exactly known for its beaches even in the warmest seasons, and especially not during winter. Of course, there was always the odd exception and in this case the odd exception was Bridget, a petite brunette. Ever since she was a child, Bridget had been fascinated with the sea. She'd saved up for her own aquarium tank, but couldn't yet afford fish, so for now she was stocking it with natural shells and near-shore sea creatures like sand dollars and washed-up starfish. With a Tupperware container of salt water in an old Radio Flyer wagon, she wandered the beach in full cold-weather gear to find more knick-knacks for her soon-to-be fish sanctuary.

The shriek of panic caused Bridget to stand bolt-upright, looking out to the sea. The water was frothing from something flailing, and it was coming her way. As it drew closer, she realized it was a girl! In some sort of purple bodysuit, with platinum blonde hair so light it was practically white, the girl appeared to be using her arms like steamboat paddles in a frenzied attempt to swim ashore. Bridget couldn't blame her; even just wading into the shallows to pick up displaced critters, the water was fuck-off cold.

Y'La continued to swim even after she'd reached land, dragging herself along the beach and still babbling a litany of synonyms for "cold" before she bumped into a little dune. She blinked, sat up and crossed her eyes to see the granules on her nose. "Sandy...? Land! I'm on land," she laughed with childlike enthusiasm.

Despite fearing for her sanity should she interact with this girl, Bridget couldn't just leave her to freeze. The poor girl was still shivering fast enough to pass for being battery-powered, her softer parts jiggling all the while. That bodysuit left nothing to the imagination... "Uh, hey, you alright?"

The green-haired girl sprang up from the sand almost faster than Bridget could track, her shivers replaced by quivers of excitement. "A friend! I've found a friend!" She leaped forward and tackled Bridget in a huge bear-hug.

"Wagh! What the hell!?" She tried to pry the strange girl off her, but the cold girl had a surprisingly powerful grip. "Lemme go!"

"A'kay!" And like that, the girl released her and sat happily beside Bridget.

The brunette shook her head. "Okay, listen, who are you...
