In the brief moment that your eyes were fixated on Michelle's perfect pink painted toes, a voice calls out from above you.
"Ummm... James?" The woman's voice gets your attention and you look up beside you.
"Oh, Jacinta", you reply, as you're snapped out of your momentary daze. You quickly try to recover. "Sorry, I was just in deep thought for a second there. We are just about to set up a work email for Michelle here."
Nice recovery!... You think... Jacinta seems a bit suspicious, but shrugs it off.
"Sorry, who is this?" You hear Michelle ask you.
"Oh, forgive me. Michelle, this is Jacinta. Jacinta, meet Jacinta. She is one of our accountants", you reply professionally.
"Nice to meet you", Michelle replies.
"You also", Jacinta says, before turning her attention back to you. "James, I just wanted to check if you were going for drinks after work with everybody."
"Oh damn, I forgot about that", You lie. You remembered the drinks, but you didn't want to go. The idea of drinking with Denise and Candice around wasn't exactly you're idea of a great night, plus Jacinta would no doubt use this opportunity to try and hit on you... Again... "I don't think I'll be able to make it, no."
"Oh okay", Jacinta says in a deflated tone. "Yeah, I don't think I will go either to be honest." It is painfully obvious that she would have gone if you said you were going too.
"Maybe next time, eh?" You say, trying to be polite. You decide you need to wrap this up before it gets any more awkward. "Anyway, I need to get back to training Michelle now".
"Oh, yes, of course", Jacinta says, slightly uncomfortable with how abruptly you've ended their conversation. "Good luck!" She says to Michelle.
"Thanks", Michelle replies. As Jacinta turns and walks away, Michelle looks at you with a smirk. "Well, that was awkward."
"In what way?" You ask her, trying to deny any awkwardness.
"Oh come on, she is so into you. And you don't want anything to do with her!" Michelle says bluntly. "You blew her off with such ease, it is like you're used to disappointing her."
Wow, Michelle picked up on that much quicker than you thought she would have. You are not sure you can deny this...
