Chapter #5

Alexander just toys around with the remote.

    by: Unknown
Alexander sat on the bed and opened the box. On top was a thick book proclaiming to be the instruction manual for a Universal Remote. Capital letters and all. Instead of a tv on the cover, there was a graphic of the remote superimposed over the globe. Considering the manual was as thick as some of his school textbooks, Alexander wasn’t too interested in reading it right now.

Alexander lifted up the manual to find the titular remote sitting in a plastic housing below. It looked just like an ordinary remote, except for the fact it had twice as many buttons. There was a helpful stick figure illustrating how to use the remote, as if people born in the last forty years didn’t know already. It seemed as simple as point and click. Under “Example” in bright balloon letters the stick figure pointed the remote at an apple and then at a second stick figure. After a cartoonish puff of some there were two apples and only one stick figure.

Alexander snorted. This thing had to be some sort of prank or gag. If he’d actually had any friend, he might think it was from one of them as a joke. More likely, it was something his mother or sister bought off an infomercial. That or maybe Alexander’s schoolyard tormentors sent it to him, trying to get his hopes up about magic being real. They all knew about his love of fantasy and sci-fi, it was one of the things they loved to torment Alexander about.

Deciding to get it over with, Alexander looked around the room for something to test the remote out on. His eye was caught immediately by a poster on the wall. At first glance it appeared to be a girl about his age dressed in the stereotypical schoolgirl outfit and leaning up against a locker. The more time one spent looking, the more odd details stood out. The girl’s hair, for instance. It appeared to be a single solid piece like on old video game characters. And her joints, the ones that were visible, all had gaps for hinges. Then there were the blue marks on her otherwise flawless skins. The ink traced circuit board like patterns up and down her exposed arms and legs. A single line ran across her face like a visor, intersecting grey eyes that looked more camera than person.

Geara. Now that was someone Alexander wished was real. She was a character on one of his favorite animes and he’d bought the poster at a con last year. She was smart and pretty and kind enough that Alex thought even his crippling shyness wouldn’t get in the way of talking to her. Alexander pointed the remote at the android on the poster and hit the copy button as illustrated on the graphic.

Now he had to choose something to supposedly turn into Geara. Alexander could have chosen any small thing in the room. His backpack, one of the books on the shelf, or even a stapler. But he found himself pointing the remote at the big stuffed animal at the foot of his bed. Alexander’s mother had bought him the therapy panther doll in the hopes it would cheer him up. So far all it had done was remind Alexander of the strength he didn’t have. Well, maybe with the help of the remote the stuffed panther would actually finally serve its purpose.

One press of the button later and…Alexander blinked. The stuffed panther was gone. In its place was the android schoolgirl from the poster, blinking in confusion while her eyes made clicking noises like shutter lenses.
