Chapter #8

The Codex wants to know her finances

    by: Unknown
Lazing atop her bed, the Mistress flipped through an Eranoan book trying her best to apply the day’s lessons. Thousands of unique logographic characters made learning to read quite difficult but, through the dense tome of unknown symbols, simple words such as ‘dog’ or ‘boy’ would stick out.

Various forms of written word sprang up around the world over time, but none were as complex or mysterious as the Elven script. It was the elves who first developed written language, the “gift of the gods” as they call it, to record their daedalean knowledge of the arcane, but the ability to record information soon proved useful for tasks beyond the realm of magic. Despite it’s difficulty, Elven was the first form of writing to reach the isle of Erano, and with a few slight adjustments in syntax, the symbols were adopted as their own. Anyone well versed in the script would find little difficulty understanding a foreign author.

A gurgle murmured followed by a pang of hunger from her stomach as she scanned the book. With a heavy sigh, the dense book was returned to her night stand as she placed a hand atop the smooth bulge of her belly. Perhaps someday she’d be able to read the thing, but right now she needed something to eat, despite glutting herself silly at dinner only an hour ago. And only one slice of pie after that. And then a few more.

“Inigo?” she called. Moments later the slender elf appeared in the doorway.

“Yes Mistress?”

“Could you bring me what’s left of dessert?” she asked. She remembered seeing a few slices of each before retiring for the night.

“I’m afraid miss Sylvia has been picking at the leftovers Madame. If you’d like I could always put in a request?”

The young woman took a moment to ponder her options. She didn’t want to give her cook any more work after such a long day, especially so late at night. “What were those cherries covered in again?”

“... Chocolate?”

“Yes, thank you. Chocolate! Could I just have some of that? No cherries needed?”

“Ehm, are you sure miss Elizabeth? Chocolate is becoming rather expensive as of late.”

“It will be fine Inigo, it’s not like we’ll run out of money,” she said recalling the haul of treasures she found that fateful night.

“Very well miss Elizabeth,” he replied before heading downstairs.

Truth be told, Elizabeth was not well acquainted with the world of finances. She relied heavily upon her family’s mill before leaving to become a soldier, and all pay was withheld until she completed a full five years of service. After all her hard work drilling and fighting, she wasn’t granted so much as a few copper pieces. In a round about way of saying it, she had little understanding of how much her treasures were truly worth.

Observing the scene unfold, the Codex now had one more barrier to dismantle.

“Our quest for perfection requires a full stomach. Perhaps I should ensure she is not bankrupting herself just to keep sated…”

So, what’s Elizabeth’s financial situation like?

------

Extravagant Abundance: She has more than enough money to support her diet. Dragons would envy such a hoard.

A Comfortable Cache: Despite her impressive haul, coin is bleeding away. A comfortable place to be, but not forever.

Economic Spiral: Living like royalty is taking its toll on her capital. Things need to change and fast!
