The minute Laura leaned on Chilan, she lost consciousness. She didn't recognize what was happening to her. It was as if she was walking in a dream world.
When she came to lying on her back with sunbeams pouring down into her face and the soft sweet murmur of running water close by. She felt a steady throbbing at the base of her skull and a stubborn ache in her optic nerve.
She rolled onto her side, then pushed up into a sitting position.
"Tuck your head between your knees before opening your eyes," Chilan ordered. "This is an unstable world you'll need to get used to."
She did as she was told but her breaths felt like steel wedges driven in between her ribs. She groaned and forced her eyes open.
She saw that she was on now a greenest grass with thick but long and soft blades. There were pine trees in clusters along the ledges and the air was filled with the fragrance of pine.
Chilan helped her to her feet and without saying anything signaled to the point where the grass blades ended. Laura nodded and started walking with wobbly steps even though she still felt pain in her ribs. It was a river, down the bank. The water was clear and swift as it flowed between the boulders whose edges jutted out. Across the river, a cliff rose to about a thousand feet.
Now they stood at the edge of an open field. There was not another soul around. But far away at the end of the field sat an amphitheater of stone, enclosed by high cliff walls. Behind it were the mountains in whose nooks pockets of snow lingered.
Chilan said, "They are waiting for us at the amphitheater. Are you ready to get up on stage and act?"
