The raw orange torchlight showed the guard reach for the note. He must have seen who placed it there. After reading the note, the guard clamored through the crowd and gathered four additional guards around him. "This note says, 'strike when the king says, Where is Remundo?' so gather around the king, moving everyone else from being near."
Obviously, the person intended to receive the note did not get it.
He and the other guards spread across the room and rushed quickly to surround the King. Meanwhile the crowd pushed together, forming an expectant audience waiting to hear what the King would say. He was in no hurry to speak to the audience as he held his cup to be filled with red wine.
Knowing his claim to be King has caused a stir, he chats several minutes with others near him while the candles are being re-lit; unaware that the four guards who understood what might happen when he addressed the crowd.
The King finally walked to his Throne, nodded to the guards on either side, and sat down. From his pocket he produced the notes he had written earlier.
The crowd became quiet, anticipating the King's remarks.
After looking over the crowd, he called out, " Before I say what I intend to say here, I need to know, where is Remundo?"
In that moment, two guards pushed the King to the floor and covered him with their bodies just as a dagger came flying across the room, sticking into the Throne chair right where the King's head would have been.
In the back of the Throne Room, other guards, having seen who threw the dagger, tackled him and subdued him with chains while the crowd dispersed. It was Remundo, the lifelong friend of the King.
Only after the assassin was dragged from the Throne Room did the King's guards allow him to get to his feet.
The King asked, "Who was it? Do you know?"
"Yes, Your Majesty. It was Remundo. You're safe now."
The King looked shocked, "No, not Remundo! We've been friends since we were boys pretending to be Knights of the Realm. Why would he do that?"
