"What do you want?"
"We could assssssk you the sssssame thing." the Others replied in a united hiss.
"W-w-we..." Jared stammered, "We want passage through the forest."
"You know that'sssss imposssible." The Others' blue eyes pierced Jared and Aris with their gaze. "Nobody passessss through thesssse woodsssss without a SACRIFICE!"
Thunder clapped, lightning flashed, and hail began raining down once the last word was spoken.
Aris turned to Jared. "I think we should turn back."
Jared looked at Aris in disbelief. "Turn back? Are you crazy?! We are neither cowards nor fools, and we will NOT turn back under any circumstances. Even if I die, you are to continue on- if not for you then for me."
Stunned into silence, Aris opened his mouth, but nothing came out.
"Close your mouth. You look like a blubbering fool when you do that."
The hail did not relent throughout the exchange; if anything, it had gotten stronger.
"What issssss your decccccccisssssssion?" asked the Others.
"What is the sacrifice we must make?" challenged Jared.
"A HUMAN Sacrifice. And NOTHING lessss will do. We are thirsty for the blood of a mortal man." Turning to Jared, the Others advanced. "In fact, you will do quite nicely."
Jared stood, frozen in his spot. There was no escaping and he knew he was doomed. As the Others advanced, Jared waited until they were close enough- and then threw a punch.
The Others hissed and swarmed into the circle, surrounding Jared, who pulled out his sword and tried to fend them off.
Aris pulled out his sword and attempted to do the same. One Other fell, only to be replaced by a fourth Other. It was clear they were not going to win.
"Wait!" Aris cried. "What if we can find you another human sacrifice? One even better than Jared." Aris yanked Jared away from the advancing Others.
"Fine. We shall give you twenty four hoursssss. IF you fail to return with a sssssatisssssfactory human sssssacrificccceeee, we shall have the BOTH of you."
"Y-y-y-es." Aris nodded, wondering what he had gotten himself and Jared into. "Understood. Thank you."
The Others opened up the circle behind the duo, and Aris and Jared quickly left before one of them changed their mind.
"Where are we going to find my replacement?" asked Jared.
"Beats me. It was your bright idea to challenge the Others and continue on. I just wanted to go back." replied Aris.
"Oh, so it's my fault, now eh?" Jared sneered.
Taken aback, Aris snapped back at his friend. "You know what? Yeah, it is. I told you we should turn back."
