Lulla swishes closer to me, her tail a bright yellow star against the deep purple sky. I think she is trying to get my attention, but I know I need to play it coy, keep my feelings to myself. Mother always told me still waters run deep, and this cow was one I wanted to notice me

Off in the distance, I can see my old love, Maribelle, her stately head crowned with sharp horns ready to take out any amorous suitors. She is three seasons older than me and more experienced in the ways of the winter. I used to be her best friend and confident until Lulla joined our herd.

A sharp wind blows my tail up and my backside puckers. A taste of winter to come. But who should I rely on to make it through the winter? Maribelle or Lulla?
