Kyle began the jog with Amanda easily keeping pace. Amanda’s tail wagged of its own volition. She loved how her heightened senses painted a beautiful mural through the variety of smells. She fought the urge to chase down the rabbit odor that caught her nostrils. The excitement of the hunt overwhelmed her humanity and she yanked at the leash suddenly pulling Kyle off his feet.
Kyle face ate dirt and grass losing his grip on the leash. Pushing himself up off the ground he witnessed Amanda’s furry behind disappear into the bushes. He called out, “Amanda get back here!.” Quickly he began pursuing his wayward spouse. He understood her animal nature got the better of her. He just hoped that she didn’t get into any trouble.
Amanda hurried after the smell trailing it. She began to slow down after breaking free of the bushes. Instinctively shifting into a bloodhound to improve her sense of smell. Methodically snuffling to find the best scent to follow. The new scents all about her causing Amanda to hurry about trying to find the source of all of them. Only when the light faded in the forest to night did she begin to remember herself. She thought about turning back into human but the matter settled itself with the distinct thud of the medallion. She barked trying to call to Kyle but failed to hear his voice. She began to lean over to pick the medallion chain in her mouth and try to figure where she was when she sensed danger. The smell of coyote caught her attention. With nearby rustling she hurried away forgetting the medallion.
Kyle continued his search for Amanda until darkness began to fall. He carefully avoided getting lost and backtracked to the road and onto his house. He pushed aside thoughts of hunger and weariness. He hoped to find Amanda waiting for him but found only disappointment. He grabbed a flashlight to continue the search along with his car keys. He couldn’t stand the thought of leaving Amanda alone outside all night. He pondered to himself on the short drive back about who he could call. Maybe she got picked up by the local animal shelter. He could call in the morning. They were closed by now no doubt. He could hardly call the police. They wouldn’t help search for a lost dog. Kyle hoped Amanda had turned back into a human and not turned into something he wouldn’t recognize. He thanked god that they had the foresight to get a dog tag with their phone numbers on it. Kyle hoped the fears he felt were unwarranted and this was all a simple mistake.
Amanda put distance between herself and the possible coyote. She wanted to cry fearing how lost she was. Her stomach growled in hunger making it even worse. She spotted the edge of the woods close by and made her way to it hoping for something familiar. The house that she came upon made her growl despite herself. In that house dwelt Tiffany ”everybody calls me Candy” Rogers. That woman flirted shamelessly with her husband. Kyle didn’t see it and it caused most of their few fights. “Candy” would come over asking for help with this or that saying she needed a big strong man while batting her eyes. She’d say, ‘Of course you can come too Amanda’. As if she’d let her husband be alone with cleavage top. Maybe this would be the perfect opportunity to spy on them. She knew that Candy was a dog lover. If she removed her collar she knew she would be taken in and then “Candy” would invite Kyle over to see her new pet. Then she could observe the interaction. After she could signal to Kyle that she was Amanda. Still, she longed to get home.
