Chapter #4

A Change in the Curse

    by: ReducedExpectations Author IconMail Icon
She looks you up and down and says "Hey, you seem a little off today. Are you okay?" You are sweating, trying desperately not to let on that you've jutst been cursed. "Fine! Absolutely fine. Can we just go now?" She goes through her purse and frantically opens pockets. She lets out an annoyed grunt and says "No! Damn it, don't tell me I left my phone by the ticket booth... I just had it out for like a second! I need to go back and grab it." You feel the color drain from your face, as you know that you'd have to make your way back through the faire. You're not too worried about shrinking any further... I mean, how many people would actually say the word "Firewall" at a street festival? Maggie gives you a kiss on the cheek and says "I'll be right back, I'm just gonna check by the front trailer. I shouldn't be more than a few minutes." She disappears into the crowd and you sigh, trying not to let the events of the day get to you. But that's when you hear a familiar voice behind you say "Well, Well. Back so soon?" You slowly spin around to see Madame Rosella standing defiantly with her hands on her hips. She still looked as beautiful as ever, even without the dim candlelight under her tent. And she was just as dangerous. "Hello there, short one. You look upset. Didn't you want to see me again?" You sternly look at her and say "Not necessarily. I'm getting out of here." The gypsy smirks and says "The girl with the black tank top you were walking with. She seems nice. Is she your girlfriend?" You silently nod, knowing that she's going to try and involve her in this whole fiasco too. You start to grit your teeth and say very angrily "She's done nothing wrong. Keep her out of this." The gypsy just laughs and says "Oh, now why should I do that? Maybe I should have her size reflect yours, that way she shrinks right down with you. You don't want to go through this ordeal alone, do you?" You look around, still not spotting your girlfriend anywhere. She must still be looking for her phone. You whisper to the gypsy "Please. I'll do anything. Just leave her alone. I don't want her to get hurt." Madame Rosella looks your body up and down and rolls her eyes. "Fine, she will not suffer on your behalf. You know, maybe I was wrong about you. You do seem to be a good person... but you still insulted me in my tent, so I cannot forgive you for that. The curse stays. In fact..." She leans in and gives you a kiss on the cheek. You feel the same sensation burst through your body that you did when you first shrank, and look up at the gypsy woman in confusion. "What did you just do? Shrink me again?" Madame Rosella smirks and says "No, not yet. I'll leave that up to your pretty little girlfriend. Or any other woman you happen to come across. I just made a little amendment to your curse. Instead of a silly word like firewall, i decided to make you change size whenever somebody says something related to your size. For example. Bigger?" You feel your size jump up an inch or two. You're happy to get that much of your height back, but that's when she leans in and whispers "Smaller." You lose the height almost as quickly as you got it, putting you back at your slightly shorter size. You realize what this could mean throughout the course of your day, and the horror obviously shows on your face. Madame Rosella smirks and says "Get it? I'll see you around, friend. Feel free to return to my tent to talk in the next few days... if you're tall enough to see over my toes..." As she walks away, you feel a deep anger and terror grow in the pit of your stomach. This curse has the potential to kill you in a matter of hours if you eavesdrop on the wrong conversations! You can't stop thinking about it, but a tap on your shoulder brings you back to reality. You spin around to see Maggie, smiling from ear to ear. "Found it! Ready to go?" You've never been more ready to go anywhere in your life. You put your arm around her and walk towards the parking lot.
