As a big fan of anime, James had always wanted to visit Japan and experience how it was to live there. Until now his parents had said no, citing that such a trip would be to expensive. But now he had the chance to make sure that his family had more then enough money for a vacation in Japan. By why stop there? His next vacation was still weeks away, with this pen he could ensure that they would leave tomorrow. Or even better, if he couldn’t travel to Japan, he would just make Japan come to him. That way he would get to experience how it was to live there in a way a vacation would never teach him.
Getting daring, James put the pen to paper and began to really alter the world. “Japanese culture is the dominant culture in the world and Japanese is the world’s international language.”
The moment James lifted the pen of the paper he felt a ripple move trough the world as it changed to fit his description and his mind was bombarded with new information. It was as if he had two sets of memories as James compared his memories of the ‘normal’ world against those of this ‘Japanese’ world. The memories of visiting the local shrine during new year. Wearing his school uniform to school each day. Visiting the clubs dedicated to flower arrangement, tea ceremony, kendo and archery during his first day at high school. Learning Japanese from when he was just in kindergarten alongside English.
One part of him felt like this all very exciting, yet another wondered what the big deal was. After all, this was how things had always been? Looking around his room James had half a mind to decide that it had, and that his memories of a world where Japanese wasn’t the dominant culture was just a dream. He saw his shelves filled with manga, light novels and video games, many of which were had their titles written in kanji to appear more authentic. Kanji which James could read no problem, as if he were reading romaji and English. No wait, he meant the Latin alphabet.
Great, this was really messing with his mind, best to take some precautions, James decided. With the pen, he wrote “I remember how the world used to be no matter how many changes are made.” As soon he lifted the pen from the paper, he could tell exactly what had changed and how things should be. But was this really what he wanted?
