You decide to shrink yourself super tiny and survive, nobody aware of your existence.
This choice: Get on top of the desk  •  Go Back...
Chapter #5

Fear the Psycho Next Door

    by: Doom Author IconMail Icon
With the note on the outside of the bedroom's door and you inside, you turn your attention to your next task. Pushing the shrinking device beneath the bed, you contemplate the desk.

Moments ago, you stooped over this piece of furniture to pick up a sticky note; now you stare up at it as if it were a mountain. How much things can change with the use of your invention.

As a first challenge of tiny survival, you decide to climb this structure, just to see how much things have changed.

You have brought a small amount of climbing gear with you, since you foresaw the predicament of living in a world designed for beings far taller than 1/8". Now you use it to its fullest, the ropes and climbing spikes making small impression of the sheer surfaced wood, but inch by agonising inch you rise, and you conquer this obstacle with the greatest sense of triumph you have ever experienced.

Covered in sweat, you pant in exhaustion, but you're shuddering with adrenaline as well. You peer down the vast gulf of a few feet, and laugh. If you can manage this, what in this vast world can stand in your way?

As if a petty god had heard this thought and wished to crush your hubris, you detect the approach of another being. The desk vibrates, and distant thunders grow in volume. Who could it be? You had chosen to shrink at mid-day, when no-one would be around. But that was hours ago, before you decided to test yourself with a climb of almost two-thousand feet at your scale. Your personal victory has eaten up much of the day, as well as draining you of energy. Better hope the investment was worth it.

The door opens, gusting air into the room of sufficient volume to shake you where you stand. Being near the edge of the desk, you hurriedly run for some cover, hopefully hiding from the newcomer.

"Yeah, that creepy guy from next door," she says, stepping forward and throwing literal shade over your position. You look up to see the magnified face of Rachel Anderson, phone pressed to her ear as she talks. Her other hand gestures with the note you left, emphasising her points to a conversational partner that cannot see her.

"What do you think?" she asks, lengthy strides carrying her to her bed, where she sits, vast weight creaking the springs. You run away again, desperate to find a new hiding spot as she changed her perspective. "Do you think he's left, I dunno, a camera or something here? Could he be watching me right now? How did he get into our house, Dan?!"

The woman is on the verge of tears, worried that someone has violated the sanctity of her home. Seeing such a monstrous, powerful creature so vulnerable, so... afraid, because of actions you've taken... Just wow.

"Should I call the police? Soon as the kids get home, we're leaving. I don't want to stay in this house knowing that... that person has been in here!"

The note hasn't had the intended effect. You should probably have thought through it's phrasing a little more. Oh, well. Seems at least it might lead to your getting a bit more time to yourself, but if the authorities raid your house next door, that could cause complications. And if events lead to the police searching this building for cameras, you couldn't guarantee they wouldn't find you!

Rachel is right here, very close from her point of view. If you could get across to her, hide yourself somewhere on her clothing, you could stay with her for a bit and avoid any unwanted scrutiny for the near future. You would miss out on laying some valuable groundwork for the future survival, though.

Maybe it's time to call this a day, and head back to your device as soon as Rachel's left the room. You could restore yourself, leave, and try a different plan.

This isn't the end of the world!
