Chapter #4

You thankfully catch a glimmer...the ray!

    by: knuckles Author IconMail Icon
The ray! It’s gotta be. You slide down the stalk, rolling as you reach the bottom and then make your way over the charred stalks the ray had somehow fried. Reaching the center you grasp the ray with eager hands and thank any deity listening for finding it.

You don’t know when something might go wrong, so you resolve to grow immediately. You can make up an excuse on the fly to your parents. Checking your watch, its been roughly 45 minutes since you used the device, which meant you could grow back anytime. The battery allowed about 2 firings a day as long as you gave it a half hour in between to cool down. Switching the knob to grow, you smash the button and a strong sense of vertigo overtakes you as you reacquire your former stature. The two thousand foot tall fence now stands merely a head over you. You glance down to the burn spot, now no bigger than your hand. You think you can even recognize the grass stalk you climbed not 5 minutes ago, put you can’t be sure. Wow, you were small. And almost wishing to return already. You will, you resolve, soon. Just need a couple of weeks to prepare properly.

“Baby is that you?!” You are startled as your mom rounds the corner of the fence near the sidewalk, a leash in one hand with her Great Dane, Mammoth, in tow. “What are you doing here, and why are you dressed like that?” You are bought a second to come up with a lie and Mammoth bounds over to you, happily barking. “Hey big guy!” You’d always liked Mammoth, he was eternally a puppy at heart. “Uhm well, funny story” you begin cautiously, but then it all falls into place in your head. “More crazy, actually, I dumped the apartment a bit too soon, my trip doesn’t start for like 2 more weeks, so Im kinda homeless and after my little selling spree these are like the only clothes I have left. Not my best call.”

Your mother’s suspicions instantly melt away at your sob story. “Oh you poor thing.” She moves to hug you, and you instantly feel guilty for lying, and a bit also for what you planned to do. Live in her backyard, under her nose, but never see her or hug her again. You kind of felt like a shitty kid. Youll address your reservations later, for now she hands you a key to the house, telling you to let yourself in while she walks Mammoth real quick. She turns to leave but your eyes linger for a moment as she walks past the patch of burnt grass near the sidewalk that until 5 minutes ago was a huge burnt field to you, she glances at it briefly but shrugs, probably thought some cigarette had caused it. You can’t help but wonder what it would have looked like if you had taken a few more minutes to restore yourself. Would she have noticed her insect son? Doubtful. You certainly would have noticed her. Towering over the grass stalks like a skyscraper. You then think if you’d been in the grass would you have noticed her then? The thick teeming blades seemed to muffle outside sound pretty well. You figure you would have felt it, minor tremors caused by the footfalls of the gods and monsters going about their ordinary days.

Shaking your head, you will get to experience those things soon enough you reckon. You proceed to your house, unlock the door, then run to the garage, grabbing your lockbox. Fortunately it’s the middle of the day so the family aside from your mom are out of the house. You head upstairs, your old room still there, untouched in years. You sigh, memories good and bad washing over you. You steel yourself, no time for a trip down memory lane. You gotta come up with a little more detail to your lie, not to mention finish the survivalist shelter and the suit in 2 weeks. You set to work immediately, grabbing your old toolkit from under the bed, a door slamming downstairs and call lunch requests signaling the return of your mom. What will happen?
