Hanson knew it would be difficult to reignite the fire if he didn't bring back any matches or a lighter, which made it hard for him to put it out as he buttoned up his jacket and put on his backpack. He decided to stash most of his supplies away in case of emergency and to make sure he had plenty of room in his backpack so he removed everything except for one of the flashlights, some spare batteries, his multi-tool and a bag of chips.
After taking one last minute to look around and make sure his meager possessions were secure he headed out into the cool chill of the afternoon air. It was snowing heavily, making it hard to see things in the distance aside from a few lights from distant houses. Hanson didn't want to stay out in the cold longer than he had to and was quick to begin his short hike into town. The snow was several inches deep, but his thick boots helped keep his feet from getting numb.
Truth be told, Hanson had seen his fair share of extreme conditions in his younger years and wasn't unnerved by the potential blizzard brewing around the town. What made him uneasy was the otherworldly chill in the air. Hanson had a strong gut feeling for when things were going to shit... and right now it told him things were going straight to FUBAR even with the walking corpses roaming about.
In just a few minutes the road leading into town came into view beyond the patch of bushes lining the ditch. On the other side of the road was a forest so thick with snow build-up it looked like someone had poured mashed potatoes all over the treetops. Hanson was cautious, even though he wanted to get to town as quick as possible. After all the shit he had seen the past few days he wouldn't be surprised to see a damn yeti pushing through the woods.
Amazingly enough, Hanson made it to the outer edge of town without incident and slowed his pace only slightly as several houses began passing him by on either side. Some still had their lights on, but most were dark and a few were even boarded up. For a moment Hanson considered checking on them to see if anyone might be willing to let him inside for a while and explain what the hell was going on. It would be nice to have some shelter, but in a situation like this there was no telling how people might react...
